What's the most memorable Corvair you've seen?
Posted by: cnicol ()
Date: May 06, 2018 07:53AM

I'll start this off with one cemented in my memory.

Like any one of us, I've seen thousands of Corvairs. Out of all of them, one struck a nerve and continues to rise to the top. Unfortunately, I don't have picture so words will have to suffice.

#1 66 Emerald Green Monza 140/4 4-door. Let's start with its coat of dark metallic green from a '53/4 Cadillac - so dark it appeared to be black during the evening. It was a factory two tone and the top was a lighter, bright metallic green along the lines of willow green.

Black interior, factory 140/4speed, VDO tach in the Monza dash, and the icing on the cake: "Cosmic" wheels from Solar automotive. It drove and handled like a dream. Tight and powerful.

The car was stunning and I stored it for the owner with complete encouragement to use it often and I did. Great memory that started my fascination with performance oriented 4-door Corvairs.

The picture below is my current 4-door but I trace it's lineage is a straight line right back to that dark Emerald green '66 140/4 with Cosmic wheels.

This photo was taken back around 1977 on the way to the Twin Cities CORSA Convention.

The Dark Green Crown V8 Car is what sticks in my memory.

This car belonged to a friend who has since passed on but last I heard, his son still has it.

Nice! CB radios were definitely the way to coordinate a caravan. Better than cell phones - party line! Time sure passes quickly; the driver doesn't look old in the picture but the picture is from 40 years ago... Good times

The cool thing about the CB Radio's we used is that we had clip on antenna's that were NOT well grounded and that resulted in a reduced range of signal.
We were able to communicate between the three vehicles without interfering with others outside of our immediate area. We had a Blast on that trip.

I have two. The one that started my interest was my brother in laws 65 Corsa coupe. it was dark red, maroon. I don't recall the GM color name. It had Koni shocks, Pirelli tires and a 140, 4-speed. Black interior. He took me on spirited drives through the local hill roads. Loved it.

My second is my own first Corvair. 1965 Corsa, 140, 4-speed, with black interior and dark blue paint. Sound familiar? I waxed and polished it every weekend, then took it to cruise Bob' Big Boy on Whittier blvd. I took it as far apart as I thought I could and put it back together. I wish I had this forum back then. I would have done more and done it better. here is a surviving photo. Sadly, I traded it to the same brother in law in the late 70's. He broke it and it has been sitting in his field since. I tried to get it back but he swears he wants to fix it. Not likely. Here is a photo of it now.

I'd say my favorite I've seen in person is the white late model that won the autocross at the Knoxville convention. Phil's SuperVair is right there too but I haven't seen that one in person yet.

Probably the corphibian or the military vehicle from the Canadaian military.

Memorable?
The flip-body late with V6 we saw on the floor of the Springfield convention.
Chuck Rust's v8.
Supervair is cool, but need to see it on the road.
If we say 'memorable' versus 'good', then mine.
Lots of more stock 'Vairs, each gorgeous and fun their various ways.

Yes, it started out in life as a 61 2door.
It has a custom fiberglass skin, and a transverse 3.8 Buick.

Craig,

A white 1967 Monza coupe owned by a very early Corsa Southern California member in 1970-72 from Santa Maria area. Gorgeous, special order car. Think it was owned by George Gunnison. Less than 4500 miles on it back in 1972.

You likely saw this car back in Inglewood.

There's been many that I think about but the MOST memorable Corvair for me is the first one I ever saw. In 1977, was a 15 year old kid working at a full-serve gas station and guy came in driving a '63 black Spyder with red interior. I remember it like it was yesterday:

Me: "Check under the hood, sir?"
Customer: "Sure."
Me: (standing at the trunk) "It takes a key."
Customer: "Nope, look in back."

Embarrassed, I walked to the rear and raised the deck lid... I thought I heard an angelic choir singing from the heavens as I beheld that magnificent turbo charged beauty.

From that moment on, I was HOOKED!

I've only seen a few in person, but Craig's 66 4-door is one of my favorites.
I really like the idea of a late sedan (my favorite of all of corvairs) with a rear-mounted V8 and 4 speed.

Craig replies: Wow, that's a case of "Deja vu" all over again. My first "gotta have one of those" Corvair I encountered was when a friend of my older brother showed up in a Black 62 or 63 Spyder with a red interior! I was about age 10 meaning 1964 or so and I was hooked from there on.

My most memorable was and still is the first one I ever owned. I had heard of the Corvair but had never seen one. I came across this one on ebay and Craig Nicol looked at for me and I went ahead with the purchase and this is the 16th year we have owned it and I still love the car like the day I bought it.

Easy for me - It is Cecil Williams 1965 Corsa Turbo Coupe.
He wrote a legendary build thread here. As the project developed, I horned in and got permission to drop in on his project. I had invited him to some of our events here in the Northwest as well. We got together a few times and after he completed it, we met up and I got to take some photos and video. Even better - He let me drive it!!!

Just an amazing Corsa in every detail.

The most memorable Corvair for me was Jon Brakke's SCCA GT3 road racing Corvair. I first saw it at Brainerd in the 90s. With a vertical fan, Weber 3 barrels, 6 speed Hewland gearbox, disc brakes and much more I fell in love. It was a small event without many cars but he was running back and forth with a V-8 GT1 Oldsmobile.
I don't have a picture but it's just white with a form follows function look.
