It's interesting who you find out own Corvair's in their hay day and still appreciate them. Tony Dow gets his Corvair back

Getting old! Now that you posted that, I remember following the thread!

Wild Customs

Looks like they did a little refurb on it since he picked it up?

Here's what I posted on a similar thread:

As a side note here on Tony. They say that somewhere we all have a double in this world, someone who looks just like us. Well, I know who Tony Doe's double is. His name is Dwight Schar, a self-made millionaire, who regularly donates large sums of money to Ashland (Ohio) College. AU has a building (among others) in Mansfield, Ohio on the corner of Marion Avenue and Trimble Road that houses the School of Nursing. It contains a large simulator lab suite of classrooms, and cost some 15 million dollars to build. Mr. Schar donated at least 5 mill of that.

On the wall of the main hall are pictures of Mr. Schar, his wife and two sons, along with some of his younger days pictures, including his high school grad picture and his mid-teen soap box derby car with him in it. I took in a publicity shot of Tony Dow in a star mag and placed it next to Mr. Schar's pictures, and the resemblance was shocking. They could be twin brothers or even identical twins. They're even the same age.

Incredible! see: [en.wikipedia.org]

BTW, if he shows up again at the SCC show, somebody show him this post, will you?

Come to think of it, I wonder if he ever ran into another film industry Corvair person, my personal friend and director on many a blockbuster film, Vance Piper.

Thank you, Matt. I've known him since he was 17. The year before, I met his father at the convention, and got to talking about other interests. I mentioned that I liked old silent film comedies, and he said "you need to meet my son." So the next year here he comes with Vance in tow, and we've been friends ever since. Sadly, his dad passed away a number of years ago, and his work as an independent contractor often means he's tied up at convention time, so we don't get to see each other very often. He's a great guy and I love him to pieces.

If there's any EM Corvair that I would like to emulate someday, it would be Vance Pipers car... my favorite color of blue, nice wheels that look right, cal custom split bumpers, all the super cool and rare period correct mods and things that are really hard to find! I got to meet him at one of the belt tosses years ago- super cool dude!

Vance has had that Corvair for as long as I can remember. He has other Corvairs, including a '65 'Brier, but the blue coupe is the longest held one that I know of. He's had offers to buy it, or the Cal Custom split bumper set, but I doubt he'll ever sell any of it. His 'Brier was once featured in one of Clark's fliers, for his use of their products.

He's not one of your stereotypical Hollywood types. Rather he and his parents are the nicest people you'd ever want to meet. I feel fortunate and honored to have him as such a good friend.
