Just received my new car
Posted by: NebraskaDave ()
Date: April 14, 2018 05:11PM

Yesterday I received a great 1963 Monza convertible that another corvaircenter.com member, kmart356, listed for sale a few weeks ago! I’ve barely had the car out and it gets so many compliments. It is an absolutely stunning car, I feel very blessed. For those that don’t know, kmart356 (Ken) is a great guy and was patient with me thru the whole buying process. He’s in Florida and I’m in Nebraska, so we had to work out the logistics of transferring funds and transporting the car. If anyone is interested, I used Montway to act as the broker and they were fine. No surprises, but I’m finding that there are no guarantees when you ship, it took them nearly 2 weeks just to find a driver. If anyone is interested I’ll go into the details later.
I didnt have the chance to get it out today because of a snow storm, so I cleaned it up a bit in the garage and looked some things over. I had a couple of questions for the group: 1. The brake pedal is too firm for my taste, what is the best procedure to diagnosis a firm pedal? 2. How do you insurance your cars? Even my insurance agent was unsure. He said he needs an appraisal, but he doesn’t seem to care where it’s from. Is there a go-to place online that you have had success with getting an appraisal?
Thanks for your help, I’m looking forward to bothering you all with more questions in the future...

Welcome to CCF and congrats on your new toy.

Most complain the pedal is too soft.

Hagerty is good I use them for my cars BUT
any of the collector car insurance companies
cater to the hobby. Everyone who answers you
will have horror stories of one company and
high praise for another. Good luck figuring
it out.

I will remind you that Hagerty offers a discount
if you belong to CORSA. You should join CORSA
as well as search out your local group of owners.

best wishes, Steve

Firm pedal is due to no POWER Assist.

You'll need to drive it to see how well it stops..

Some replacement brake SHOES although NEW, may not stop well...

Autozone WearEvers are widely used..and liked..

Does this have a pinstripe or is it trim?

I think that is light reflecting off the paint. It's interesting, it's seen in both photos but looks different in each one.

Addressing your pedal too firm comment, do you have a little freeplay in the pedal?

It does have a white pinstripe. As for the brake pedal, maybe it has a bit of play, but very little. I find that I have to really stand on the pedal to get it to stop, and it’s hard to 50% brake, for instance when you’re in city driving. My plan is to take it in to a shop have it looked over, I haven’t worked on drum brakes in over 20 years and obviously it needs to be done right. The car is safe to drive and will stop, and the parking brake works well.

Yup! Hagerty has insured all my old cars for over 20 years. Excellent customer service and claim payoff.

AS far as the pedal issue I'd try bleeding the brakes, you may have some bad flex lines in the rear.

This is a common complaint. As other's mentioned using a "softer" brake shoe lining reduces pedal pressure. Also make sure the brake shoes are adjusted and that the contact area is good. Sometimes the drum arc and shoe arc are not the same and only part of the shoe lining touches the drum. In the old day shops would "arc" a shoe to fit the drum, now it's difficult to find a shop that does that.

I got lucky and found a shop that does mostly truck clutch and brakes. The old hobby car stuff is just a sideline, but their re-lined/arck'd linings reduced my pedal pressure and improved stopping.

I had a very stiff pedal until I replaced the rubber hoses and the master cylinder. I don't know which was the problem.
