Need part - .001 main bearings
Posted by: BobV66Vair ()

I am looking for a set of NOS main bearings that are .001. They will be used to center the crank as needed. Please consider that your parts will give life to another 140 engine! thumbs up I'll post photos of it playing for you to see.

If you don't get any hits, check with Clarks, they had some undersized Clevite 77 bearings at a good price a while back.

Clarks does not have any. I really hope someone on the forum has a set and will part with it. I'll pay what they are worth.

I know what GM did to build engines and they did take the pain to make a straight line by using .001 main bearings, BUT, I can't tell you how many engines I have built just putting the standard main bearings in. Including the race car! I have only had ONE crank break and it was my own fault for putting on a steel crank pulley a long time ago. OH, and then, GM goes in and bends the crank by putting an off center bearing in #4 main! Go figure.

My recommendation is to build the engine and not worry about it.

There is a set on e-bay. From the pics, the flanged bearing looks to be corroded.

That seller is very proud of his bearings. Wonder if that brown-ness on the flanged bearing is merely cosmetic. or more than cosmetic?

In the description, it says "polished to .001" undersize"... if the
description is correct, those bearings have been messed with and that
is the reason for the discoloration. For the price that seller wants,
I think it would be better to just have a set custom made.

You can not take any material off a bearing ! Those look like they are into the copper!

Bearings that are .001, .002, .010,.020, etc have material added to them to make up the clearance that has worn or ground away!

I have, in the past, added a piece of .00005 or .0001 shim stock behind the bearing. Many would call this a big no-no, but it worked without any problems until many years and miles later when I got rid of the vehicle still running fine.
