What do people use to remove the surface rust on the outside of the transmission case. Want to clean it up before assembly so I can paint it.

If you're painting it I would suggest degreasing, a wire brush and the rust converter of your choice.

It's already clean. Just wondering what people have used on theirs.

For surface rust get yourself on of those stainless steel scouring pads. Kinda like steel wool but much larger strands. That'll get all the big stuff. Then go over it with phosphoric acid which will dissolve the rest of the rust and leave fresh, clean metal. Wash off with water and dry with a heat gun or hair dryer(or put it in the oven when the wife isn't home). You can get phosphoric acid at home depot for cheap. It is sold as cement etcher.

I follow the label directions and remove the loose rust with a hand wire brush then apply converter to transform the "tight" rust to a primer type substrate ready for top coat of my choice.

Scrape, power wash, clean and de rust with wire wheel in angle grinder, clean with oven cleaner, prep with phosphoric acid, prime, paint. I like the rustoleum hammertone paints. Looks like original cast and durable.

Soda blasting or glass bead, great for cast components. Regular 'sand' is a little coarse.

Hmmmm..... I just used some paint stripper and then a good water rinse with a scrub brush. Rustoleum primer and gloss black paint.

Get it squeaky clean and then use Eastwood’s cast iron gray paint. It will look like it was just cast yesterday. Good luck!

From a suggestion of a coworker I tried works toilet bowl cleaner. It worked great just required a wire brush and elbow grease. Unfortunately I must not have rinsed it off well enough because when I put it in the oven to dry it it came out stained yellow. Sucks but not a huge deal since I'm going to paint it.

I cleaned it with Castrol Super Clean and a wire brush. The primer was a self etching rattle can and the top coat was Rustuleum machine gray rattle can.
