I suggested in your first thread to find and join your local club. Did you do that? The club members will direct you to the shops.

best wishes, Steve

Wandering could also be from over-inflated front tires. The fronts should be roughly 10 PSI lower than the rears.

ridgleagolfer,

Spectre is correct about the tire pressure differential, I run 18 in front and 28 in the rear. I don't know about any alignment shops in fort worth, but I can recommend one in Garland, the name is Garland Safety Lane alignment (972) 278-7202 They know their way around a Corvair. When I took mine there they pooped open the trunk, removed the access plug and adjusted the steering box, I was surprised that they knew about adjusting the steering box.

A common problem when there is excess play in the steering is a worn out rubber "pitman arm bushing". It's on the end of the long center steering link, so "pitman arm bushing" is a bit of a misnomer.

The adjustment screw for the steering gearbox lash is easy to access but you can ruin the gearbox if you tighten it up when it doesn't need it.

Sorry about wandering off topic, I don't know anyone in Texas.

At what speeds? Sounds like you've tightened up the steering components, so Alignment most likely will help.

CASTOR up front is what helps keep the car in a straight line..

In the rear... Toe IN keeps it from wandering / darting .

Sadly both these "normal adjustments" can be a hasle on a 50 year old car.

Up front the Big nuts on the large rod are usually frozen.

In the rear it requires Getting under the car...loosening the rear motormount
and engine seal retainers. Then up front there are 3-4 bolts depending on transmission.... where you add / remove common shims..

So it is labor intensive for most alignment shops.

Ridge,

Locating a shop that will even look at a Corvair is not an easy task. I do not know of any in the Ft Worth area, but I havent looked in a long time.

However, changing the oil/filter and doing a tune up are both simple and easy to learn. Oil filters are available locally at NAPA and Pep Boys (Usually have a couple on the shelf) and oreillys can usually get one on their next truck from the warehouse. Otherwise Clark's Corvair has them. Points/condensor are available almost anywhere. ASk for Chevy 6 cylinder. I personally strongly recommend getting a Pertronix I from one of the online Corvair Vendors, but opinions will vary on that statement. Appropriate Spark Plugs are not always available on the shelf, although can be found. I use R44F plugs in my Greenbrier, but I had a box of them in the garage. As for substitutes, others will hopefully jump in with the latest Bosch or NGK part numbers that will work fine.

I dont know your Mechanical abilities, but if you can figure out which end of a screwdriver to hold, you an accomplish many tasks on a Corvair. They scare people off because it looks different than expected when you open the hood.

Im located in North Richland Hills near 820 and Rufe Snow. If you want, I would be willing to spend some time with you to look over the car and maybe help you get that oil change and so forth done. I dont run a garage, but if you are willing to get a little dirty, Ill help you get going.

Send me a PM if youre interested.

Be careful with spark plugs, never use Champions, they have an extended tip that's specially designed to melt Pistons. And oil, you may have to buy some fancy synthetic or classic car oil, not even diesel oil contains zinc anymor3(?), which is pretty necessary for old style lifters and cam wear. I also don't like anybody tinkering with the steering box adjustment, it's not an adjustment, it's meant to be used with an inch pound torque wrench, or just tighten a fraction, it doesn't have much to do with steering play. It's not what people think

Andrew.. he's talking about the screw on top.... you pull a plug in the trunk to get to it.

Extended tip Champions are not correct

H's..... which no one carries!! gg

I know what he's discussing, the "don't touch the steering adjustment bolt". It will "tighten" the steering, but just the feeling of being tight, it really doesn't fix the worn bushing issue
