When did they stop putting ash trays in cars?
Posted by: 66vairman ()
Date: March 11, 2018 01:31PM

I was talking with a car buddy about converting the Corvair ash tray to another use and he said "You know I haven't seen an ash tray in a new car for a while know".

So when did ash tray's disappear from cars?

Anybody converted their Corvair ash tray to another use?

BTW I quit smoking cigarettes shortly after graduating from high school - a looong time ago. The savings have probably paid for my Corvair addiction - LOL.

Ash trays are still offered - usually as a dealer option on request now. So, you replaced one addiction with another? That removed ash tray location is great for a single gauge on a race car.

I know that '68 coupes don't have rear ash trays, I'm not sure if '67 coupes still had them or not? As for new vehicles it seems that some do and some don't.

At Honda, we started phasing them out around 1990. From that point, our cars had coin trays and accessory plugs. You could purchase an ash tray and cigarette lighter and install them in those positions if desired.

The ash trays are easier for storing coins than the coin trays usually, especially those that have slots for each type coin.

Using ash tray to store small metal 'things' can make some interesting noises.

The first new car I bought that had the lighter and ashtray as an extra cost option was in around 1995. I don't think any automaker includes them as standard in the USA anymore. Fortunately since most carmakers do have it as a cost option/accessory then the area where the ashtray goes usually is a storage cubby now.

Funny story, I owned an early 1980's VW that had the cigarette lighter inside the ashtray. The car developed a battery draw issue that I searched for and searched for, along with taking it to a shop who could not find the issue either. I replaced the battery, alternator and voltage regulator with no improvement.

Turns out a dime had fallen from the ashtray into the cigarette lighter hole (lighter was missing) and was shorting out the lighter circuit. That was quite a happy day when I figured that out.

Over the years, I have found more than a few coins/items that fell into lighters which were pointed down! Blown fuses usually

No cigarette lighter fuse in the Corvair until the 1967 model year (or maybe 68).

The rationale was that the lighter would pop out when it got hot enough like a thermal breaker. Being old I know of a few minor wire fires caused by stuck in cigarette lighters.

If it's a German car it will have a massive ash tray or in my case a removable pot the size of a small soda can complete with a lid. Doesn't have a lighter though. French cars used to have more ashtrays than anything else but they seem to have cut down now.

We did have a customer's Austin Healey in recently and it didn't have an ashtray so he just used the floor, not nice.

Still at a loss why anyone would want to smoke in their car?

My wife's new car doesn't have a CD player we noticed when wondering where to put the disc in. Coming to think of it there's no ashtray either, only got 3 cylinders too!

None of my cars have ash trays. They have coin bins. A coat or two of undercoating will keep the coins from rattling. (in the states you could buy the rubber coating I once smuggled in for my spark plug wire separators)
