"Unsafe To Carry"
Posted by: playerpage ()
Date: March 09, 2018 05:43PM

Down at the local Uhaul today, picking up the car carrier to haul my 180 Turbo project over to the body & paint guy.

They had me down for a Tow Dolly instead. When I said that wouldn't work the lady tried to change it in the computer, and the computer wouldn't let me have the carrier. The system claims a Corvair is "Unsafe to carry."

That is exactly what it said.

Your right Matt, Uhaul would never have known the difference. I can't tell you how many times people have told me "nice Camaro." I always said, thanks but that Camaro is a Corvair. Then I got funny looks.

Unsafe due to the rear engine and tongue weight precautions.

I always told them I was towing a 65 Corvette and if they later learned it was Corvair, I'd tell them the guy at the counter must have heard it wrong. smiling smiley

Don't feel too bad. I tried to rent a trailer - to be towed behind my 1997 Ford Explorer - and they would not rent it to me. Same black list.

At least with the Corvair, since it is not with you when you rent, they would never know.

They're all a bunch of idiots at Uhaul, several years ago I tried to rent an 8ft box trailer to move my daughter to college, but because I had a Ford Explorer they would not rent me the trailer, they said No Explorers, it didn't matter that I had the post Firestone fiasco redesigned four wheel independent suspension version vs the solid rear axle, an Explorer was an Explorer to them. Went down to road to United rental they said no problem.

Sounds like UHaul turns away more business than they accept. Heck of a way to run a business.

I had a bad experience with U-Haul, too.
I rented a one-way enclosed trailer last year in Plattsburgh, NY.
Soon after loading 1000s of lbs and on the road, I found that I didn't have running lights.
Not too safe when you're traveling after dark.
I made it home to NE Ohio about an hour after sunset...

Started off with no brake lights either, but U-Haul furnished a new harness jumper extension which fixed that--- I think.

Don't know if they were ever able to fix that old trailer, but I did register complaints about the equipment (not the service, they were OK).

I used a U-Haul to tow my Corvair 120 miles some years ago. I just backed the car on the trailer. The U-Hall folks never batted an eye with me using their equipment to tow a Corvair.

I just tell U-Haul it is a VW Bug I am transporting. No issues with the Bug.

Suspect the the Legal Dept at UHaul puts out the banned list. It costs $$ to defend against a bogus law suite. Lots of money sometimes better to just pass on the business.

Do any of you have an Equipment Rental place nearby? I've rented Car/equipment trailers with a lot less questions. Friendlier and more knowledgeable too.

Like a DOT driver running outside his logbook, if you're lying and a fatal accident happens, there's a legal case for "it's your fault because you shouldn't have been there".

That's the way it was explained to me by a trucking company safety director, even if the accident itself was clearly not your fault. I read through some fatal accident reports when a dispatcher with another company, it's bizarre the amount of stuff that comes into question. Lawyers get involved and common sense goes out the window.

Corvette sounds an awful lot like Corvair, certainly closer than Camaro or VW.

The reason U-Haul won't rent to carry a Corvair is they lost a law suit with a Corvair owner!

Had the same problem when I tried to rent one in Alabama. Told them I had changed my mind about the Corvair and that I was going to buy a VW instead. They said no problem and rented it to me. I thought maybe it was a clearance issue. But where I loaded and unloaded there were sloped driveways so that wasn't an issue for me.
