Don't use Pertronix II with the powerglide Vairs. There are idle issue with it.

Use Pertronix I with the GM 6 volt coil.

CORRECT! Use the Petronix I with stock, or stock type, coil.

I have Pertronix I with Pertronix Flamethrower coil on both mine and they work great. Had the coils for maybe 3 years now, electronics since forever, zero failures.

But it is not the Flamethrower II (12 volt) coil, which was the one to avoid with the Pertronix I.

I've had to replace two of the Flamethrower coils.

Never Again!

There are threads "Pertonix 1 Wiring" and "Pertronix 2 Wiring" where we discussed it at length.

There are stories of folks that ran just fine when with Pertronix combinations that should have been wrong. While I certainly can't dispute their testimony, I would not use combinations of parts or wiring installations apart from what is recommended. There's enough trouble with that stuff when all done correctly.

I just about went insane last year dealing with an incorrect Pertronix installation that ran fine that way for years but gave up the ghost on the way back from the CORSA convention.

Count me as another one to recommend not using Pertronix 2 with Powerglide. They don't get a good signal at the low RPMs that a PG idling in gear has.

The Pertonix stuff is great when it's working... Always carry a back-up in the glove compartment, preferably a plate with points and condensor along with an old stock coil.

On other forums years ago the Petronix coils had issues. Some batches seem fine, others have problems.

I buy a quality brand replacement coil. Now it's basically one size fits all for the 60's GM cars. Works fine in non-turbo cars. With the turbo's higher cylinder pressure under boost a better system is required.

I have a small supply of good coils from the LMs I dismantled. Should keep me going until I convert to EFI.

I have 2 good Flamethrower II coils from my Greenbrier and Camaro which aren't needed. They will be For Sale at Helen. Both had been installed using the resistor wire, so they only saw 12 volts at starting.
