EM brake shoe question
Posted by: bbakerga ()
Date: March 08, 2018 03:47PM

I just read the FAQ section on brake shoes, and I must be stupid, but I can't figure out what size brake shoes my 64 convertible takes.

it mentions 228's and 189's,but I can't find anything that says exactly what an early car takes...

Do I need 189's (9" x 1.75") or 228's (11" x 2")?

and just FYI

FC's are 11"

LM's are 9.5" but rears are wider.

Same for shocks..

EM / FC are the same

LM's use different front and rear

+1 on 189 sometimes called s189

Make sure the set you get has the shorter front primary shoe, not all of them have this, some are equal length and you'll have to cut compound off the front shoe to make a primary shoe.

I would recommend the WearEver shoes that are sold at Advance Auto Parts. I had Clarks shoes and they produced horrible brake fade (downright scary!). The Wearever shoes I have on now are so much better the car brakes great and I have no desire for discs anymore.

Thanks, Nick. I will check those out. I just saw that Rock Auto has Bosch sets for about $11/ axle. I would expect Bosch to be really good, but I like having your review on the WearEver shoes!

+1 on the Wearevers...I have installed a few sets on club members cars and my own 64. The shoes stop increadably well!
