Broken Cooling Fin - Options?
Posted by: Nick_Soapdish ()

Hey all! I just received the cylinders for my engine rebuild and one of them has a couple of broken cooling fins. Normally I would just go back to the supplier, but they've been pretty terrible to deal with (example: it took over four months just to receive these things. Also they sent me a cylinder with broken fins) so the less they are involved, the better.

Can these be welded back on? Any other options to fix?

If there is just a portion broken, I doubt you'll ever notice. Are these used cylinders, or new? If new, I'd go back on the supplier, request a replacement, then send back the broken one. It would be tough to weld, and I'm not aware of any other options to repair.

I agree with Larry... just a small amount on a few fins.... nothing to worry about..

What took so long to get the cylinders, waiting for Machine Shop services
with boring oversize?

Used. One is a small portion, and the other is a pretty sizable chunk:

Not worried about the smaller one. And if the more-knowledgeable-than-me folks (which is everyone here) don't think the other one is reason for concern, I'm good with that one too.

I guess? In all fairness, it took three weeks for them to realize they didn't have enough cylinders for a whole engine, then it took them nearly four months to get them done. Near as I can tell, they just didn't care about actually providing the product once they had my money.

I've used them worse than that and never had a problem.

They may work fine but that would irk me and I would return those unless it was stated upfront that there were broken fins. Clark's does not accept core cylinders with broken fins so why should a paying customer have to accept broken parts?

Oh I'm plenty irked. But they've held my build hostage for long enough that I just don't have the time to screw around any more. Gotta run with what I got!

That doesn't look like Clarks work to me. The ones I got looked like they could be new, both inside and out.

May as well close this one too Matt, like the dual master cylinder thread. So others can unexpectedly stumble on to this vendor every 6 months and receive substandard customer service.

Dylan

are you saying these heads are your heads?

IF SO: Are you sure the fins weren't cracked when you TOOK them in? Or did you "SHIP" them"?

I don't think there's a way to determine whether these are my cores or if some other cores were used. The ones I sent were completely intact (they required no broken fins) and seriously over-packaged.

I actually just found the larger missing piece in the box I received. They were not very well packaged, so that explains that. The smaller piece is still unaccounted for.

However with the consensus being that functionality will not be affected, no reason not to move forward with what I have.
