Courtesy Lights LM
Posted by: igottajob2 ()

I recently purchased a used set of courtesy lights but it doesn't appear to be the correct set for a late model. This was my fault, I didn't research enough so if anyone has a used or NOS set they want to part with let me know . If I'm wrong and these will work also let me know lol. I am trying to avoid buying them new as it's not friendly on my budget. Thanks guys

Those seem to look like what I remember mine looking like.
Haven't stuck my head under the dash for a while though.

Yeah I know how much Clarks wants but I need one bracket too and the shipping from Clarks is always expensive so I'm looking for used or nos instead

The Corvair sedan harness had "bullet" connectors for the door switches.

You'll need the installation instructions (Accessory # 986658) and note the sedan courtesy wiring is different than the convertible.

The sedan wiring is not intuitive to install. The harness was designed for use in full size Chevies, Chevelle, Chevy II as well as Corvair and for models with or WITHOUT door switches (instructions show how to install door switches)

Being a "one size fits all" it's an odd layout - also the wire to the psg. side is about two feet too long for the Corvair, just coil it up.

So these could work? I have door switches which I added of course.

Without checking them in person, I'd say yes. Just follow the installation instructions.

igottajob-- yes yours could work if the wires reach. Forget about the sedan 986658 instructions as your wiring is like the convertible harness.

Your dome light wires come down the drv windshield pillar and connect to the main harness near the headlamp switch. The power wire is orange or orange/white and the ground is white or black/white (you may have to pull out the instrument cluster).

I'm going to guess that if you unplug the dome light harness from the main harness, then your connectors will plug in place to bring everything together. Your connectors look the same as the dome to main harness, but you won't know until you check.

If it fits it will install a lot easier than the 986658.

Here ya go, under dash courtesy lamp installation instructions. Apparently, there are minor differences between '65 and '66 and beyond.

By all appearances, one size fits coupe, convertible, and sedan.

igottajob - O.K. hold on. You said you "added" door switches. Does that mean your 500 had no door switches or wiring to them?

I know some of the basic GM cars had no dome light, or they had a dome light that just turned on via the headlamp switch with NO door switches or wiring to them.

Please explain what you have and then you'll get a better answer.

I think what you have will work.

I'm no sparky / electrician but that harness will be in parallel with the dome

light circuit. With that said you shouldn't need to tap into the fuse panel.

I'd say your harness is for a sedan, the convertible harness has fewer connectors.

As others have said in the past those 20 ga wires are marginal so consider using

LED bulbs.

Let us know how it works.

Mine had the wires already for the door switches so I just bought two switches and put them on.

The Orange wires are connecting to B+(12V+) usually supplied via the dome light orange wires.
The White wires are connecting to switched Ground. The door switches or the dome light white wire.

A simple circuit that is complicated a bit by being a "plug-in" accessory.

The problem with this is I don't have connectors for the switches. The harness has round plugs that go into the switches, the harness for the courtesy lights does not have the round plugs, only square.

igotta - The round connectors are called "bullet" connectors. Not common now but you can still get them on-line.

Does YOUR car harness have the round connectors to the door switches??

If the car harness allows the door switches to turn on the dome light, the the square plugs on your courtesy lamp harness will allow you to connect the courtesy lights in parallel with the existing dome light.

To keep it "plug-in" get some male & female "1/4"spade" connectors that you can splice into the door switch wires.
Usually available at most auto parts stores (FLAPS)

Thanks for the info! My harness connectors currently plug right into the door switches which turn on the dome light. So I need to either buy bullet plugs or buy my own electrical connectors and make my own?
