Related subject to VIN swapping - stolen cars pre-17 digit standard

One question I've had over the years is how to find a car that was stolen that was pre-17 digit VIN (the mandated standard today.) Places like Carfax and the like only cover such VIN-standard cars.

Reason I ask is that I had a '79 Suburban stolen back in '81. The crook even stole the title, my gas credit card, and cleaned out the house while I was away at work. He then charged his way to LA, California (left a bloody charge trail). Probably some unsuspecting person bought it and didn't suspect it was stolen.

But I had the last laugh, for what it was worth. I had removed the catalytic muffler and converted it to regular (leaded) gas, so it probably wouldn't have met the California emission tests. Add to that is that (you have to know the configuration of the vehicle) I had also changed the transmission crossmenber to pre-catalyst configuration, and it would have been difficult to put a catalytic muffler on it. (It had dual exhaust ala pre-79 style.)

Just for sake of information, the VIN was CCS269F178946 in case anyone is interested. It was camel in and out, and had the woodgrain Estate package, along with camper mirrors, a roof rack, buckets and a 454. At the time, it was the most expensive Sub I'd ever seen.
