Picked up an aborted airplane engine build.......
Posted by: toms73novass ()

I picked up this hole thing as a lot of parts, it appears to have been an engine build for an airplane.

The crank is the one item I wish is could nail down closer. It is brand new.

It is definitely an aftermarket crank. It has a threaded end where the throwout bearing would be and the bolt circle is 3/8 instead of 5/16.

It also does not have the cast appearance of a stock crank with no cast in numbers, just a 3.000 stamped in one of the lobes. I measured a difference in the rod throws of approx 1/32 which would verify it is a 3" stroke instead of the 2 15/16.

All the oil passages and journals are radiused.

Also has floating pin forged pistons and forged rods along with cylinders that are bored and honed properly for the pistons at .004 over.

Rk block with all the upper studs replaced with new.

Think I did ok for $900?

Looks like a Billet crank.... stroke length is weird for sure...

If you wanted to use a pilot bushing.... just thread it???

I "think" I have seen a reference to NEW crankshafts being available for Corvair Aircraft Engines on one of the AirVair websites!?

The cost was over three times more than what you paid for the 'box of parts!'

Looks like you got a Vairy good deal!!!

Matt - I think a receptacle for the pilot bushing could easily be made to fit.

Dale - From all my research that is exactly what I was thinking.

Here is an example of one:

Tom

I just sold some engine parts to a friend of mine who is building a Corvair engine for his plane.

That crank is exactly like the one he showed me two weeks ago.
Can't remember where he got it, but he is hooked into Bill Wynn in Florida.\

He told me he paid 3K for the crank

Also there is usually a front assembly that holds a 5th bearing and I don't see that in your photos.

There is a housing that bolts to the block to support the additional crank piece and bearing. Not sure, but that threaded part might be where the crank extension fits to hold the 5th bearing.

Bob, Yes you are correct about the 5th bearing, it is an option on the aircraft builds, in the link I provided above I believe it is a $500 upgrade.

I would try to sell it all to an airplane guy. The Experimental Aircraft guys seem to flock together at certain Airports. There's a group south of Minneapoils that I've met and could find with some investigation but I don't really have contact information and memory fails me even for the name of the Airport. I will sell them a core engine for $400 but that's it for my involvement. Whether they know it or not they are usually looking for a 65-67 110 or 95. I won't lower my price to them, it's funny a year later when they spent less money for an engine they can't use.

I very well might resell, more crank than I probably need. I would sell it very reasonably.

Personally, I'd build it to see how strong it ran.

You would need to change the cam...

Aero engines rev no higher than 3000 rpm.... and all the fly guys want is a true 100 hp 2400-3000
