Fuel Pump In Tank
Posted by: Lane66m ()

I keep seeing recommendations of putting a pump in the gas tank, but never any enough info on getting the task done. I have my tank out and looking to install a pump that can be used with the current engine with carbs, then later with the Big Valve Engine with EFI.

Anybody have some info that will get me headed in the right direction?

ps: Of course, I will have some under car electric pumps available since I won't be needing them once I get the in tank pump done.

There is not a crossover pump available that will go low pressure and high pressure even with a regulator.

BTW, the pump mod is covered in the Tech guide!

TBI injection pumps run lower pressures of 12 psi in most cases and can be regulated down for use with a carbureted set up. To do so, you will need to add a return line and to use a regulator with a return outlet.

So I get the efi in-tank pump and regulator to start, then add fuel lines specified in the EFI Owners Manual. got it.

I printed out the Brown EFI's owners manual this morning, so I will start collecting parts called out in it.

I posted a low pressure internal pump for carb'd engines. I think Seth posted an installation drawing.

I was faced with the same problem. I was thinking about running my carb off of the EFI fuel pump by connecting the fuel line to the return line for the EFI, as the return line fuel pressure is sufficient to feed the carb, at least when
the EFI fuel pressure regulator is located in the engine compartment. I decided that for me it was not worth the trouble to plumb in the extra fittings
and lines for something that wasn't going to be used that long. I ended up using a low pressure in tank fuel pump for the carb, and mounted the in tank efi pump at the same time, and then just deleted the carb pump from the system when it was time to run the efi. Besides, by the time I was ready for doing the fuel portion of the EFI, the in-tank carb pump had died and I had a external pump mounted close to the tank... real easy to delete that one!

What do think caused the short life failure???

The in tank one went 40000 miles, I didn't consider that to be
a short life, although there may be others of the same style that
can last longer. The reason it quit working was that the plastic
gears inside broke, the motor was still working.

Here's a new power isolator if you don't want to destroy a Corvair fuel sending unit to get an additional one:

I consider 40K miles to be a very short life for an in tank pump. If life was known to be that short, I would never go to the trouble to install one, just use a typical external type.
