Build Thread: '66 Sprint Convertible

A little while back, I took the Sprint to Cody's to begin the process of body repair. Cody's going to get the body right and prepare it for paint.

While the car only had one body dent, it was obvious (to Cody) that three out of four corners were full of filler. It was obvious (to me) that the rear seat pan was Swiss cheese.

Bondo on the left quarter was only the beginning...

Cody found this at the left rear corner and on the deck lid...

Meanwhile, back at my place, I was digging out the floor I saved from my '65 AC 4-dr. The metal is good and the plan is to use parts from this floor for the Sprint's rear seat pan, riser, and rear floor pan.

Wow - who knew that a 4-door seat pan would work in the 'vert!

Had the car been damaged/repainted since you owned it, or was all of that bondo present during your first ownership stint?

Those backhoe front loader units come in handy don't they.

That vertical shot of the floor pan is a picture worth saving.

The four-door pan appears to be identical with the exception of the convertible's drain troughs at the extreme left and right sides under the seat.

As for the bondo... the only damage it had back in '71 had to do with the left rear quarter which was about 1/4" short of full length. It's likely it had already been replaced at that point.

Back then, I extended it slightly (with bondo) and that work is visible under the second layer of red paint. Since that time, it was smacked again in the same area and "fixed" with heavy bondo. The other damaged areas all came later. sad smiley

Huge thanks th Craig for letting me be a part of this build! It feels good to be part of a car that I have heard so many stories about.

So far every body panel is quite the adventure with the sander! The fun part is finding someone else's bad. The not so fun part is fixing others mistakes...

I'm jealous that you have A) a front-end loader, and cool smiley the land to drive it on! ggg

Looking forward to following this build. I'm assuming you're keep the door-mounted gauges for the sentimentality. How did those work in practice? Didn't you need to take your eyes off the road to look at them?

Decided to start with the small and nasty right quarter dent. But the sander showed another hidden surprise. On the bright side at least the metal work through here was actually great aside from the bondoed over holes. 50 holes to weld up and a rust hole to patch and then I'll move onward.

I'll let Craig post the rest of the surprises if he would like... otherwise I will as they come along

Cody,
Nice thread. I enjoy watching the progress.

What are your intentions on the progress of the bodywork? Are you planning soda blasting? Hand stripping of the paint? Epoxy primer? What about rust prevention?

You do good work so I look forward to your reply.

Thanks

It's rough to find more than expected when sanding but good that you found it and can repair it. No one will know the work you did under the paint but you will. That will give you pleasure when you look at it, knowing how nice it really is.

Good job, keep posting. thumbs up

Thanks guys!

This one will be mechanical strip. Sand blast the areas I need to and then epoxy primer followed by surfacer. por15 is what we have discussed so far for rust prevention.

Rockers and quarters were about 75% full of debris, nests, garbage, and clay dust. Today was finally warm enough for a 2 hour flush of everything. Now it's time for some progress!

A few weeks back I got the front and rear sections of the passenger doorjamb that were rusty fabricated and welded in. Then I decided my jeep needed it's front locker installed and took a little break
