tailgate trash

All this stuff was loose inside my tailgate. Looks like it was originally sprayed on the inside of the outside of the tailgate. What was its purpose? Sound deadening? Rust prevention? Original or aftermarket? Just curious.

Do you replace it when restoring?

Never had one.. just a guess... even though there's no reason for sound deadening..

Replace? I would. Wait for someone else to reply .

Since the tailgate in side the passenger compartment, I would put some sound deadening material in there.
It's as simple as using a self-sticking square of fatmat or a similar brand.

I will take my own advice when I get my two '62 wagons back on the road. cool smiley

Pretty hard to get much of anything inside the gate. The only access holes are the backup lamp openings and the little 3x5 hole under the access door for the tailgate handle. Maybe a spray material if using some sort of flexible wand type sprayer?

It was hard enough getting that stuff OUT. Spray sounds like the only solution. thanks

This line had me confused for a while.
Until then I had not realized that the discussion was about WAGONS!
I was thinking it was a Rampy or a Loadside!
For the record, "Tailgates" drop down.
Corvair wagons have "Liftgates"!spinning smiley sticking its tongue out
