EM Transmission Swap
Posted by: RKF ()
Date: February 27, 2018 02:53AM

Is it possible / advisable to remove and replace an EM 4-speed transmission without dropping the power pack from the car? A friend told me that it can be done by disconnecting the front mounts and lowering the front end of the power pack.

Possible, yes. Advisable, NO!

In the long run it will be easier to drop the whole powerpack, and do the swap.

Also, less likely to break the throwout bearing shaft. If this happens you have to TOTALLY tear down the differential to replace! Not worth the risk.

Yes it can be done. I have done it several times. Throw out shaft can only be broken if the differential is removed.

Honestly it's probably faster and easier to just remove the entire powerpack IMO.

doooh! I was thinking the whole trans diff assembly. But still think removing the entire power pack is quicker in the long run.

The trouble is that virtually everything that you will need to disconnect to lower the front of the powertrain is the same things you disconnect while removing the powertrain.

You have axles/heater hoses/speedo cable/side eng to body seal retainers/engine bay wires/fresh air outlet hose/front eng to body seal retainer/wires to batt and ground straps/remove rear grill and rear eng to body seal/loosen rear mount nut/plus front xmember and clutch and shift linkage. Only things untouched is coil wire and temp switch plug and gen wires and the powertrain would be on the floor and easy to deal with.

I suppose it depends too on the method/tools to actually drop the powertrain from the car. I use a single floor jack so my time to lower is pretty minimal. If you are using a motorcycle jack or cradle I could see some time spent while setting everything into place; or maybe not?

BUT....If you're doing it in a Howard Johnson's parking lot with a junkyard tool box and a scissor jack, as I've done....go trans only and motor on

You are correct wagonmaster seen it at conventions
