Wanted - Delco Ignition Coil
Posted by: junkman ()

Looking for a good used or NOS Delco ignition coil with the numbers 087 stamped into the case. Doing a part history check on the part number, it appears to have been used on the 1960 through 1962 Corvair engines except for the turbo. I am attempting to put a car back to "as built", but it isn't a "show car", so this item isn't a high priority. Just has to be a good coil. I thought that I would throw this out to see what's out there. Please give price with shipping to 01550. Also willing to trade parts if there is something that I might have of similar value.
thanks Junk

That may be a good number, but the parts books can be confusing. Sometimes GM had two numbers for the same coil. One number was ONLY for the coil (and that number was stamped on the coil) and a second number was for the coil and bracket as a unit sold over the counter.

No idea how I aquired so many but no 087's in my collection. About everything else though.

I've got a very nice original from a 1962 80HP.

This was originally installed with the 087 facing the engine.
So in your case, any otherwise correct looking/functioning coil installed the same way would get 'r Done.

Trouble is the 1115087 ignition coil is also an NCRS part! There are repro Delco boxed coils out there.

Wondering, are the GM restoration part coils essential identical to the originals?

I would think that since they have to meet GM standards, that they are probably as good as any other GM coil that is made today. Unlike many other restoration parts, I believe that these coils are being manufactured by GM in the same manufacturing facility.

I just ran some other Corvair coil numbers, and they all came up as also fitting Corvettes. Possibly was should start selling all our used Corvair parts to the Corvette people, since they are the ones with the high dollar cars... LOL.. I want the coil for my 1962 Chevy BelAir station wagon... a car that is as far removed from a Corvette.

Does not look exactly the same. At least in the terminals. The original has different plate that fits over the terminal. There are locating holes in the bakelite that orient tabs on the plate. Repro would not pass an NCRS judge, I'm sure of that.

Compare this with the top photo in Steve's link above.
