Got a Quick Box! hot smiley

I bid on a Flaming River quick box and won it on EBay! I paid up but I'm still happy. Unobtainium is mine! Now I just need one for my other Corvair.

I had heard rumors they are no longer making them, but it's still on their site?

I'm going to send them a message and see if they still have a few.

I wonder why FR discontinued the box?

Seth said they made a mistake on the last run of boxes making them reversed, and now have stopped making them, he tried evidently to get them to make more but no deal.eye rolling smiley

My first FR box was reversed -- as sometimes used in street rods. My second is way off center and has about 1/2" of play at the steering wheel (yes, it's properly adjusted). I've been told that wear on the ball nut/pitman arm shaft gear is the likely cause of the play in the steering wheel. So, I'm guessing quality (or lack thereof) played a major role in discontinuing the box.

I have 2 new ones in the box I got from Seth a few years ago and they are both correct, but have no clue if they are off center?

My FR box has a lot of play as well. I am 98% sure it is adjusted properly. I'd really like for it to be tighter.

You outbid me. Enjoy it. Now to call the Corvair Ranch to get a stock rebuilt box.

I ordered a FR box strait from Seth. It was easy to put in and has worked perfectly. I can drive down the road with one finger on the wheel. My wife complains a little that it is harder to park, but I have been teaching her about only turning the wheel while the car is in motion. It is a shame they are no longer available. It took me 45 minutes to from 50 year old steering to new.

I'm 100% sure mine is adjusted properly, Paul. I can crank down the adjuster until the box binds and it still has play.

Has any one considered a steering quickener? I'm going to attempt fitting one onto my '02 Blazer's steering intermediate shaft. The stock box is a 16:1 unit. Once I add the 1.5:1 ratio quickener, it will be somewhere around 10.6:1. Seems like a much less expensive option (obtainable?!) than the unobtainium quick ratio boxes people only talk about. The quickener is from Howe Racing, runs $85-$90 and comes in 2:1 & 1.5:1, at 8" L X 2 5/8" in diameter, so fairly compact. While it would take some fab work, it would be neither elaborate nor expensive. Is there room in a Corvair to run such an option/object? What do the Corvair Gurus say?

Interesting. Please let us know how it works. Too hard to steer? What will the final "lock-to-lock" end up with this installed in a Corvair. I can't do the math!

For the steering quickener do-dad mentioned above (1.5:1 ratio), take the number of turns you have now and divide by 1.5 (or multiply by 1.5 if you install it backwards). grinning smiley

If you currently have, for instance, 5 turns lock-to-lock, this would reduce the number of turns down to 3.35.

That's the piece, American Mel. I guess I scored with Summit Racing, as I paid about $85. Also, unsure as to how many turns it currently makes. Its a stock '02 2WD Blazer, so I would imagine I'm currently around 3 1/2 to 3 3/4 turns. After some quick math, it looks like it will take at least a full turn out. It will be a bit before I attempt the install, but I will keep all posted once I get on with it.

I wasn't really on a mission to make my steering quicker. I just wanted a solid, fresh steering box for my ride.

I had a steering quickener in Vairy V8 during the nineties.

It made it almost impossible to steer when standing still.

They were designed for power steering equipped racecars.

I took it out...maybe the new technology has improved.

This is the same unit as mine from Speedway Motors.
