Squeak coming from inside engine
Posted by: Tre107 ()

So after getting my heads redone witch was new valves, guides, and springs if I remember correctly I got it put all back together and the first start up was yesterday. The car ran fine until it warmed up and started to squeal loudly and it only stopped when I gave it gas. I figured it was just a pulley but I took the belt off and turned it over and there was still a squeak. I thought it might have been the bearings in the rocker arm studs some how didn’t get back on the right rocker arm that they where broke in with. Could this be my problem and if so should I just get new rocker arm bearings and rocker arms?

Possible lack of oil on one rocker ball OR a pushrod installed with oil hole near lifter instead of at rocker arm which again results with no oil at rocker arm.

Throw out bearing? Try depressing the clutch when running at idle. Does the squeak change or go away?

Push rod guide plate upside down? You should see the little "u" on it if correct. I know this makes quite a squeak because a guy that looks a lot like me did this once.

A mechanics stethoscope will help you isolate the noise.
I have found a squeak on a friends fresh engine and it turned out to be the valve rocker ball, un-lubricated. ne squirt of oil and the noise went away. Then we checked oil distribution tot he rockers.

Having the pushrod butterfly guides in backwards will make the pushrods nearly impossible to install.
Also... if the heads have been machined, a pushrod or many may be rubbing the bottom of the guide. Machining the heads can change the angle of the pushrod to a point that it no longer clears the bottom of the hole in the guide.
A mechanics stethoscope will help you locate the noise while the engine is running.

Another possibility is a head gasket leak which sounds like a squeak or a chirp sometimes. A lot of times that's worse when the engine is cold and gets better as the engine warms and expands, just the opposite of what you've got going there.
I only mention this as a possibility, it's probably something in the valvetrain.
If it does become more likely, I would wonder who did your heads and if flycutting the head gasket surfaces was done, if so how they determined they were all 3 at the same depth and whether you used stock steel or copper gaskets.
Again I would not jump to this conclusion easily, I just thought I'd throw it out there. The other things already mentioned are more likely the culprit.
If a guide plate is backwards, you can just remove those 2 rocker studs and retorque to 30. Of course torquing the whole head is better but I do it all the time when doing o-rings.

Got to working on the Corvair today and took all the pushrods out and it turns out two of them were backwards. I flipped them around and readjusted the valves. I started the motor up and there was still a loud squeak. I then tried taking the belt off and pushing in the clutch and there was still a squeak. I also did a little more investigating and the noice didn’t go away when the engine was reved. I’m still wondering if the rocker bearings are worn out because I checked some and a few looked pretty beat up with scratches. Let me know your ideas, thanks.

Did you put oil or assem lube on ends of pushrod and the rocker balls?

If not you may (note: may) have the squeak continue until oil gets into the moving parts. Of course this is assuming the two backwards pushrods were the problem.

Yah I just lubed them up some more and it didn’t help. The noice also gets louder as the engine runs. I took the valves covers off to oil the rockers some more and the passengers side had lots of oil and the drivers didn’t have any.

I had a squeaky rocker ball. Plenty of oil to it. The fix was to install another new one. Strange.

Just curious, how would too tight fuel pump retainer bolt cause an engine squeak?

I took my rockerarms and bearing out today and all the bearing look pretty beat up. Every one of them looks like the one in the picture. They are all scratched and miscolored. A few also have deep scoring. The rocker arms also look worn as you can see in the picture. I think it might be time to get new lifters and bearing but before I do that I wanted to see if this was what was causing my squeaking. I don’t know if it will hurt the engine to turn it over vithout the valves in it or not. Thanks for the suggestions.

Did you put assembly lube on those when you installed them?

Valves are still in heads!!!

ALL are closed now... crank away!

Those are Rocker Arms and ROCKER BALLS [ not bearings.. ]

Valve lifters are still in engine

Why change the lifters? Did oil drain out of the pushrods when removed? If so, The lifters should be fine. The lifters are now mated to each lobe of the camshaft and replacing them adds more wear to mate them again.
Order new rockers and pivots from one of Our Venders [only], lube the pivots
with assembly lube and install and adjust.
Was oil pressure checked?
