How to help Early Shifters

Everyone knows that the plastic bushing in the front for the shift tube sucks big time. It stays in for a while then pops out or breaks. How do you fix that? With a bronze bushing!

The bushing OD is turned so it is a tight fit in the holder and then soldered in place. This does make it removable but it will not come out and/or break like the plastic bushing can.
Below are a couple more pictures.

Where did you find the bronze bushing?

Not everyone. Maybe most know, but I didn't. I still have the original whole shift tube setup in my '62 Convert working with no problems.

I machined one from UHMW in 1998... still in there and still works fine. It is
more slippery and elastic than the stock nylon one, and fit much better.
I didn't have any breakage problems with the stock one though
