As the Parts Turn

I was disassembling a differential the other day and I didn't think anything about it. I am taking off the top cover and everything looks normal, sort of.

And then I turn it over to see if there is a baffle on it and I see this mess on the bottom side. I think it is built up crud until I touch it and it doesn't crumble away.

I then see if the vent will pull out and it actually does pretty easy but firm! I clean things a little and it looks like this is a made piece and not just a grommet.

Closer inspection reveals a GM part number!

In all of the years this is the first time I have seen this. I knew it was a 66-9 diff and I don't think it had been apart before because of the way things were put together and was still original looking with the date on the gear set and case sort of go together.

This is what makes life interesting!
