3-spd vs 4-spd case differences
Posted by: 65CrownV8 ()

I find myself in the unenviable position of having spent an entire day cleaning a case (late saginaw) only to realize it’s a 3-speed. It has been on a shelf for years, no internals, and I didn’t even know I had a 3-speed case. My question is, other than the squelch plug on the bottom, are there any other differences between the two cases? My intent was to prep the case and build up a 4–speed for the V8 car and have it at the ready.

Figured Mike or Ken would jump in. I’ve already started breaking down a 4-speed. Just hate to have all that effort go to waste. It’s already in primer and was almost to the point of gloss black being applied.

It will work but you wont have a reverse Detent. You must use the 4 speed shift finger too. I think the reverse gear is the same. I used the 3 speed case on the racer a couple of times. Not a good idea for a street car imho. Mike

Thanks Mike. I managed to get a 4-speed disassembled and will do a more in-depth internal inspection tomorrow when I get the 4-speed case cleaned up. Determined not to throw this case out.

Matt,

Don't have a problem ID'ing. More a problem remembering where this case came from. I just didn't realize I even had a 3-speed case. Pulled it off the shelf and cleaned it up and had it primed before noticing.

The main shaft is also a common item between the 3 & $ speed trans. I think the clutch gear is also the same.

As far as the differences between the cases it is only the reverse detent that is machined in the case. I have thought of trying to modify a 3 speed case just to see if I could get the detent installed. Obviously the side covers are the same but just don't have the reverse shaft and pawl installed. Those are easily converted to the 4 speed configuration.

Thanks for the reply Ken. Normally, I would toss this on the recycle pile, but it's harder to do when you have sweat equity in it. The 4-speed internals I just removed are going to have a nice storage container for now.

Be sure to tag the case so you don't do this again.

best wishes, Steve

Already hung the tag on it. Shouldn't be a problem now. It's also the only painted trans, so it will be hard to forget why it's painted.
