FOR SALE

Not mine, nor do I know anything about it.

This was just listed in Kansas City Craigs List for those looking for the older type 901 trans from a 914 5 speed. They are asking $1200.

Wouldnt this be the easiest way to get a 5 speed in a Corvair, Once turned around the rotation would be correct ?

I'm sure the same could be done with a Boxster transaxle.

The Porsche 901's gears are "Straight Cut" reversing the direction isnt't required.

Even the final drive?

I believe the ring gear in the 914 can be flipped like the Volkswagen.
The transmission gears are straight cut so they can run in reverse.

It's also normal for Porsche boxes to be mounted upside down...

I have seen a few 901 transmission gear sets over the years, they have all been helical cut gears (except for reverse).

The final drive in the 901 and 915 transmissions are not hypoid gears but spiral bevel gears; the axis of the pinion intersects with the axis of the ring gear. This is the reason they can be "flipped" from one side of the transmission to the other. The 901 was used in early 911 cars and in 914 cars. Since the 914 is mid-engine the factory installed the ring gear to the opposite side as compared to the rear engine 911.

I believe the 914 motor rotates clockwise, as you face the VW/Porsche fan, still rotating opposite a standard Corvair.

Here is a link to past CCF discussion.

My first experience with a similar setup was in the mid 70s, Gilbert Robinson Restaurant founder, Paul Robinson, had a Corvair powered Deserter GS which used a 914 trans and a reverse rotation Corvair with triple Webers. He allowed many of us with a few rides. IT WAS VERY, VERY QUICK in our KCMO gymkhana/autocross events and was prep'd by a local Porsche specialty shop, BHR.

He also ran his bone stock 1972 Porsche 911-S coupe, but the local Porsche Club would not allow his Corvair powered GS or any Corvair powered cars in their local club sponsored gymkhana events as LM Vairs had beat them routinely in those days.
