Does anyone own a 1963 Corvair car with factory heater delete?
Posted by: ral1963 ()

Does anyone own or know of a 1963 Corvair car, any body style (non FC) with factory heater delete?

This must be a factory built heater delete optioned vehicle...

Any leads would also be appreciated...

Rick,

I don't know about your 63, but a friend of mine does indeed own a 64 Monza convertible that is a factory, heater delete. What information are you interested in?

The reason I am asking is that although there was a gas heater option and heater delete option for 61 through presumed mid year 63 Corvairs under RPO C48, it should not have required a specific code on the ACC line of the Fisher Trim tag and we have known stock heater delete cars and images of their Trim tags to support the data from 60 & 61.

How ever the trunk was re-designed mid year for 63 and the "spot" that would allow a gas heater to be installed was removed, presumably along with the gas heater option.

It is assumed that this change could have prompted the need for an ACC code on the Fisher Tag for heater delete if offered.

Another change early in 1964 production changed the trunk area again...I do have an Fisher Trim tag from 1964 with the Heater delete option listed on the ACC line of the Fisher tag.

So either the ACC code was created in mid 63 or early 64...just trying to find an example of a 63 Fisher tag for a car with Heater delete and start from there.

Rick, according to the 1962, 1963, and 1964 Assembly manuals for heater delete, Chevrolet released a few parts to Fisher body who installed them. That would explain the Heater delete code on the Fisher tag.

Thanks for the reference info Bill...

The earliest I can find anything on RPO C48 Heater Delete is for 1963, but I am not sure of the date, so not sure if a mid year thing or all of 63. I don't have any trim tags with a ACC code but I don't think I have any examples that were claiming to be a heater delete car.

Can you reference specifically the 1962 Assembly Manual info for option C48 Heater delete?

This page from the 1962 Assembly manual options section might also shed some light on it - it shows "Option 113 cancelled" on 8-3-61 because the air heater became a regular production item on Corvairs

Thanks for that...

So for 62 Fisher Stamped an ACC code for every car with a Direct Air Heater, Willow Run used an "A" as found on every tag I have seen or in my collection.

Oakland used an "H" as found on every tag I have seen or in my collection.

So the million dollar question (ok, the .02 question) is that did Fisher use a different code for Heater Delete or just not add the A or H if the car to be a heater delete optioned car?

...until a 1962 Fisher tag shows up missing the A or H ACC code, we will be in limbo.

No the reverse is true for 63, both plants "Stopped" adding the Direct Air Heater code and presumably used a code to signify "heater Delete"...

Now I just need a 1963 Car with heater delete from both Willow Run and Oakland to figure out what those codes are...

I’m curious about these two parts that were released to and installed by Fisher body: Cover - Upper Hole, Cover - Blower Hole. Where are these installed?

Based on the photos showing the parts that were installed by Chevrolet, it would seem that at the very least there should be two additional covers for the holes that go through the body wall behind the rear seat, so maybe those are the “upper hole”, but where or what is the “blower hole”??

The the "upper" hole and "blower" I was thinking for blower hole, a plate to cover where the blower fan would normally reside.

Rick, are you thinking that the blower housing and air distributor was still installed on Heter Delete cars, and all they left off was the blower? Because I doubt that is what they did. For one thing, the blower housing and air distributor would’ve been installed by Chevrolet, and I don’t see them installing it at all if the heater delete option was selected. But if no blower housing installed, then there is no “blower hole” to cover.

LOL, I wasn't thinking... I was just thinking of where a block off plate could go and knew the blower wasn't going to be there...and my mind went "blower hole cover"....

The thing that always bothered me about “heater delete” option is that it also means “defroster delete”. While I can certainly understand some areas of the country not needing a heater (Hawaii, southern Florida, etc.), I’d think they might still occasionally need a defroster.

Back in the day when I was daily driving Corvairs in Michigan (70s) you used to be able to buy a 12v air heater (like a small hair dryer) that came in very handy on cold winter mornings. I’ve not seen anything like it being sold for years.
