I understand that the trim pieces Bezel, grill etc on FC's are anodized aluminum. Anyone have experience with getting them refinished?

Most folks remove the anodizing, polish, and add a finish to seal.

A few companies do repair trim and bright trim anodize (automotive type), but it is usually expensive.

MattNall had a great link [www.widman.biz] on how to refurbish shiny trim.

I've had a bit done over the years.

Locally, we use the term "Bright anodizing" for the chrome-like finish for automotive use, and anodizing - for the industrial finish.

Plenty of people do anodizing, some chrome platers do bright anodizing. It is normally pretty expensive.

Our local guy is such a PITA....that every alternative solution seems easier.

Rhys

In the Los Angeles area I used King of Trim to strip, polish, bright dip, re-anodize and paint my LM aluminum trim. Came out great! Other local club members have used them as well. Not cheap but better than new.... They also polished all my stainless trim as well. Beautiful!

I shipped the stuff to them. About 2 months turn around.

I have had very good results spraying the anodizing with oven cleaner to remove it. Richards post pretty much sums it up very well.

I'm in the process of refinishing my headlight bezels and have today soaked them in the drain cleaner solution without much success. Ill have to try the oven cleaner next and hope for better results. Just how does one determine the anodizing is no longer present ?

Some of the shine is diminished, I found that sanding with 800 grit you could notice it sanded much easier than before. Then worked up in grit, or dropped down to get rid of bad spots.

Basically it becomes ugly and easy to scratch. You may have used an environmentally friendly drain cleaner that is not as caustic. Or not enough.

After using the oven cleaner it helped but the anodizing is still not completely gone. One issue I suspect is that I initially soaked the bezels in cold water outside in the drain cleaner solution. The bottle instructions of the oven cleaner mention using the spray in a 200 degree oven for best results. The oven cleaner was likewise used in cold weather (mid 30's). So I'll go with another try. I did use ample drain cleaner, 5 tbl spoon to 2 gallon water so I don't think that an issue. The DC I used had been in the house for some time so it may have lost some potency if that is possible. Next time I'll use freshly purchased ingredients and hot water.

Temp can make a big difference. When I did mine it was in the 80s and let it sit all day.
