GM Vortec 3300 3.0l i4

Good Evening Everyone,

I’ve been searching the Google-sphere for info on the GM Vortec 3300 3.0l i4 engine in Corvairs. As I understand it, this engine is basically the 153 used in the Chevy II. It has the same trans bolt pattern as a SBC. Has anyone ever put one in a LM?

They are still being produced and are available in reverse rotation.

Thanks,
BobbyC

I am familiar with the 3.0 liter version of the 4 cylinder engine as Mercury Marine was still selling them for use in boats.
But to put one in a Corvair I would ask why go to all that work.
They were neither powerful or light and there are so many other engines that are more powerful and lighter in weight.

I was mainly researching them because they can bolt up to the stock trans with an adapter and it didn’t seem like a huge amount of fabrication would be necessary. However, I am open to learning about the other options available. I would like to put something more modern in a LM convertible I’m restoring. But I don’t want to lose my back seat or hack the car to pieces.

What would you recommend?

bobbyC search here for Chance Parker. He has late convert with LS and Porsche gearbox in rear.

You can find his build here or look at V8 Registry for lots of mid/rear and even front engine Corvairs.

Another option are the GM Vortec V-6's.

I'm confused. The 3300 is not a Vortec and is a V-6. The 3000 (or 3.0L) is a vortec 4cyl for industrial use. And the 153, or Iron duke is a 2.5L. As mentioned, much better choices than the Iron Duke. The 3800 GM engine would be a great V-6 engine. Very reliable.

One of the biggest key pieces is the same bell housing pattern as the SBC. The 3800 is totally different although it is a good engine.

It should be mentioned that no one makes an adapter to the Corvair transaxle anymore.
Kennedy was the last one and they have told numerous people they will no longer make them. Other options were the old Kelmark/Mid Engineering bell housings.
Any of them would have to be sourced used or make your own.

The Chevy II 4 cyl was 153 cu.in. The later iron duke version was 151cu.in. (2.5L) and the boat, forklift industrial was 181 cu.in. (3.0L). The 151 and the 181 both had a 4" bore with the stroke being different. The 181 used 350 V8 rods and pistons. My brother in law bought a boat with a bad 181 4 cyl with a 2G carb so that I would be able to learn all of this. We ended up buying a 151 iron duke and swapped over the parts to make it the larger 181. The only thing I had to do to the block was drill and tap one mounting hole by the timing cover.

The 153 CID Chevy II 4 cylinder engine, which GM refined and produced for Mercury Marine, is not the same as the Iron Duke. They are often confused with each other, but they're quite different from each other.

Apparently, you can still buy a brand-new Mercury Marine engine. You can read about it here:

135 hp - not a lot, but it's probably net hp, not gross hp, so it's probably more powerful than a 140 Corvair engine. But look at the weight 515 lbs. Ouch!

I think the most socially accepted, car show accepted, option is a v8 Chevy, LS is rapidly becoming the engine to use in everything. Chevrolet finally made the 350 obsolete.
