140 Rod caps
Posted by: gnrand ()

Is it just me but I struggle to disassemble the rod caps from the rods. I understand that it is important to remove them straight and equal distance from the rod. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I think there is a tool (which I do not have) that expands the rod from the cap. I also struggle with the reassembly in the block.

They are annoying. I just hold my mouth right and keep tapping and tinkering with them until they either come apart or go together.

Yes I agree. When they jamb (and they will) don't force, just tap either side until the cap is loose. Patience is a required. A good nights sleep helps - LOL.

I have a brass drift for tapping on them. Usually if you can get them dislodged initially you can walk them off a little on each side with your fingers.

I have a plastic tipped hammer that I tap the end each rod bolt alternatively, while watching the spacing of the gap. Usually works pretty good for me.

Believe it or not the rod ends actually spread and splay out the bolts, that along with the nuts putting a burr in the cap hole makes for interesting removal. All the techniques have been described that work already.

BTW, when I get really anal I actually squeeze the rod ends together for a good fit, clean up the rod cap holes and then resize the big ends.
You would be surprised at how little clean-up there is when I do that. Not recommended for the backyard mechanic!

When I was disassembling my engine, I used a block of hardwood and a hammer. The wood didn't damage the bolts and I could walk them off on the ones that were stuck. Now the one that had a spun bearing? That one refused to come apart without some force. I imagine the knocking had forced the rod out of round and the bolts were no longer straight, so after a point were binding up in the cap holes.

Don't be afraid to seat the Rod Cap back on and try again, if it binds coming off. If one side of the cap is slightly further off the bolts, the cap can bind.
