Ran the Corvair at the Zip Tie Drags
Posted by: Cataldo ()

A couple of weekends back my father in law and I ran out to Tucson drag way for the Roadkill Zip Tie Drags.

60'..... 2.569
330'.... 7.459
1/8..... 11.524
Mph..... 60.45
1000'... 15.021
1/4..... 17.979
Mph..... 76.09 mph

This was my best full 1/4 mile pass.

This was at 32* total timing. My old balancer had slid (and was falling off) with a new one on it showed 32* and is accurate. The old one showed 36* before it tried to fall off.

The last pass with 33.5* timing (all i could put in it until the vacuum advance can hit the a/c bracket) picked up quite a bit for only 1.5* more timing.

60' 2.599
330' 7.450
1/8. 11.451
Mph 61.34

Please excuse the bench racing but that would have run 17.8 at 77.x mph.

The winds picked up and the rain was coming in so they capped us to 1/8th mile. Ill be honest i was hoping for a bit quicker. But Im going to divert blame towards lack of timing. Lack of secondary carbs and 3000' elevation.

Corvair Specs:

Full interior with A/C
No spare or anything else that didnt need to be there.

That engine has a Larry's Corvair 260 cam, standard bore TRW pistons, All the rust and the missing floor boards probably lightened up the car for drag racing! LOL Good to see its still running strong! put the secondaries on it and it will cut a second or 2 off your time! smoking smiley

Dave,

Thank you! I figured you'd know what cam it was. Do you have the specs by any chance? Ill try googling for them as well.

There is a whole lot less rust now then there was. Thats why we didnt get the secondaries on it, had to do all the rust repair around the windshield, old one was cracked in half and had to replace it for the races. Fwiw it lays over at 5000 rpm pretty hard, i figured it was cfm limited.

Not bad at all for 2 carbs and 3.27's and a 25" tire!

"Timing all in" ??

Are you doing this with VA hose off?

Rev engine to 4,000 rpm?
---------------------------------------------
You'll probably be better with a dist. set for Drags only... east to change out at the track.

Base time at 14 BTDC mechanical all in 22 deg. @ 2000 rpm for 36 @ 2000

Easy to mod on the engine with a dialback light and tach.

Her's the chart of all dist. as built by factory... after 50 years... who knows what you really have.

Yeah its a 140hp distributor either 66 or 67 if I remember correctly. The Vacuum can hits the A/C bracket. I just need to notch it a touch and itll be great.

Just remove the VA canister!! Do you even drive this car long distances?

VA only works in High Vacuum "CRUISE on the Freeway" conditions..

That 17.9 isn't super terrible considering a '62 Spyder ran 18.5 in the quarter.

The 65 turbo runs almost the same ET and mph according to the magazines when they were new. Put some secondaries on it. Bet it picks up a full second and maybe upwards of 10 mph.

Yes. That is my plan. I have a pair of secondary carbs that ill need to rebuild, or a 390 holley just missing an intake.
