OT, Tow vehicle height or altitude.

I'm planning to lower my truck, I'd rather it not be so high off the ground. I was wondering if it would have any effect on it's towing ability. All new trucks are being sold so high I can't see inside the bed without a ladder. So question is will a lifted truck make a better tow vehicle than a lowered truck? Same truck otherwise.

From what I see on the road, lifted trucks need to use a larger drop on the hitch to keep the trailer level. If the hitch is not dropped, then the ass end of the trailer drags.

Bottom line. The trailer needs to be flat and level.

I lowered my '93 Chevy 4". It drives and tows better. Much easier to load things in the bed also. The only disadvantages are ground clearance and suspension travel. If you don't have load levelers and sway control get those. You'll never pull anything without them again.

My only concern would be that when lowering the truck you maintain the same capacity in the suspension. if you go to a softer lowering spring in the rear it might adversely affect vehicle handling while towing.

Just something to keep in mind

I didn't change the springs on mine. I used dropped control arms on the front because they were free and I changed the spring mounts in the rear. I do wish I had stiffer springs. I've never had anything that I thought came with stiff enough springs except for my '97 International 4900 which seems about right.

Never thought I would say it but my 2013 Crew Cab four door 4X4 6.7 Super Duty Powerstroke diesel is not enough truck.

Not in regards to power and towing capability but for stability on the road...I'm in the market for a dually.

To the original question...some of the baddest tow vehicles I have ever seen have been slammed.

I'll add that we used Load Levelers and a Swayaway [ shock / dampener.. ]

Even when towing a 16 ft 1962 Stanley Coach...with a '78 El Camino, with towing pkg. A simple Shock absorber made all the difference in the world, in Crosswinds...

Wish I had a picture of my 1974 454 SS El Camino towing the racecar to El Mirage.

I used it as my main tow vehicle for about five years but never got a picture with a trailer.

The current Super Duty, El Camino, and the 1991 7.3 diesel have bags, sway bars, and or air shocks.

Thanks all, that was kind of what I was thinking too but you never know what you don't know until you learn and I like learning from others rather than making my own mistakes. The truck I'm planning to lower isn't currently the tow vehicle but there's the thoughts of it maybe turning into one later.
