Anybody know where I can get a new windshield for my 66 Monza? I just acquired a crack in it. I live in Southwest Florida

Safelite stocks LM at a very decent price if you install it.

I live in S. Calif. and called Safelite and was told "Our dealers in your area DO NOT sell windshields UNLESS they install them."

I wanted to install my own windshield (done it a few times over the decades) and I had stripped the frame to bare metal, made repairs, and painted it. Installed new butyl bead and then the new windshield I found a new windshield on an online site and picked it up locally from a wholesale glass jobber.

Not everybody has the expertise to do their own windshield. If you can't, then find a qualified body shop that can clean the frame, repair any corrosion damage, and paint before the new windshield goes in.

My experience is that most glass shops just cut out the windshield and caulk in urethane sealer over the old butyl and in goes the new windshield.

Thanks. I just called Safelite and they will not sell one to me or install it. I was looking to purchase my own install it myself. I have to install my rear windshield as well. I wanted to take it out so I could go ahead and fix around the inside of the window that needs addressing. Any more thoughts on where to get a good windshield at a great price

Wow that's stange, lots of us bought and installed them from Safelite. I think mine was about $180. Local didn't want to install in a classic car, but no problem purchasing.

There are a number of "online glass brokers" who just shop your request and get back to you with a price. Sometimes they ship, sometimes they find a local jobber who has windshields in stock for wholesale.

The site that gave me the best price was [www.windshieldstogo.com]

BEWARE they are only a clearing house that deals with local companies. Great if you want to go pick up your own glass. If you contract to have the windshield put in you are going to end up dealing with a local contractor.

Again - fine if you go pick up your own glass - BUT DO INSPECT THE WINDSHIELD as a wholesaler will not take a return. The good news is the wholesaler I went to did inspect the windshield, found a defect and got another good windshield, but it required an extra trip for me.

Just look up "auto glass" or "auto windshields" in your area. I found a local shop that was more than happy to sell me one uninstalled, and it was $125. I ended up purchasing another for my 65 GTO convert, it was only $110! Just do a little looking, you'll find one.

Can you use a clear one, with no scratches or cracks? I'll be taking it off my project car, and I have a box to ship it in. It's Pilkington Classic Glass.

I have never had any issue getting a reasonably priced new Late Model Corvair windshield installed in my area. The windshields are pretty readily available. Last one I had installed was only $250 installed price. Now if only I could find one readily for the 1962 Corvair Wagon I am working on at reasonable prices....sigh.

Our local Safelite want's $285 cash and carry. So there appears to be quite a range on what these franchises charge.

Steve sez: ask them how much if they do the install.
many times the price includes installation and they
charge the same either way.

I look for small, independent installers here in Phoenix. They usually do NOT want to install in an old car and are happy to sell me just the glass if I have cash. This works for my Corvairs and more recently, an 87 B2000 windshield. The last batch of 5 I got for $100 each but that was 5-6 years ago.

I need to buy a new windshield and the ones from Safelite look appealing. Can anyone with a new Safelite windshield take a picture of it. I want to see what the shading at the top looks like. The windshield I am replacing has only about a 1 1/2" shading, it is aftermarket with no brand that I can find. Hopefully the Safelite shading is more like the original LOF glass.

AFAIK - Safelite is just a bunch of franchise shops. Service and product seem to vary from one area to the next. In my area they are so busy with new cars they won't even quote a price on an old car. Just not interested.

The only LM windshields I've seen in the last decade either come from S. America or China and the tint varies with the brand. Basically you have to go look and decide if you want the windshield a supplier has.

For what it is worth, many years ago I knew a guy who was a "Manager" for a Safelite location.
He told me that Safelite at that time made their own glass and that it was typically thinner than factory original glass.
My concern about having a thinner windshield would be from a safety related point of view as well as a fit and finish.
I guess one could use a thicker gasket or seal material to bring a windshield out far enough to meet the trim but it could still result in a less than ideal situation. JMO
