Worn PG converter pump drive splines ?

Has anyone had a PG converter with the splines worn inside of the converter snout that drive the main pump shaft ? I had one a while back that was worn bad enough to make a noise on hard acceleration that sounded like spark knock! All the internal rotating parts are supported by this shaft and side thrust was making the shaft" walk around" the splines. I suspect these splines are part of the converter cover and never get replaced during normal rebuilding, and may be a problem in the future. Thoughts ?
