Gas tank sending unit question
Posted by: blackspyder ()

Are there any replacements for the grommet on the wire that runs the gauge where it hooks onto the sending unit on the fuel tank? Mine is broken and so hard that it will not stay connected.

As per this post on CC, you may want to contact M&H and see if they will sell you one. The appear to have all the correct pieces.

"BTW. As far as I can determine - M&H is the ONLY company that makes ALL the Corvair harnesses. M&H builds all their harnesses in the U.S.A. (yes some of the parts come outside the U.S.A.)."

Correction - M&H Electrical Fabricators in Santa Fe Springs, CA makes good quality wiring harnesses but are not the only manufacturer of Corvair wiring.

American Autowire also makes equally as good wiring harnesses for our Corvairs also.

We carry a full line of the American Autowire Corvair harnesses. We sell and use them in our service department as well with terrific results.

Even better, our American made Autowire harnesses cost less than the M&H versions!

If yu do a direct comparison of M&H to American Auto Wire you will see why the difference in price.
Any picture in M&H shows the harness is wrapped just like the original.

Every picture I see with American Auto Wire is a kit where you have to put the wires into the fuse block, run the wires to the respective place and then wrap yourself.

It looks like the difference in price is the extra labor operation.

If you want to build your own harness - American Auto wire.

If you want a plug and play - M&H.

I have used M&H, I have not used American Auto Wire so my observation are what is in the respective web sites.

If I understand the original poster, the 90° female end of the wire, which snaps onto the fuel sender stud, won't stay on.
You may want to try to gently squeeze the female end (when detached) enough so that it will stay on the stud.
Then wrap with electrical tape or coat with liquid tape.

At any rate, that's what I have done.

X2 the grommet is just for insulation, not holding the connector,if we are talking about the same thing. You can also use plastic dip for insulation instead of the grommet.

Related sorta, the connector that is in the sending unit, do they sale those at all separately? I put a in-tank pump in my car and used the one off a old sending unit. It worked fine but I hated relying on 50 year old rubber.

I checked with the 2 companies that make the wiring harnesses, they will not sell pieces separately. The 90 degree boot is the item I need. The bend has already broken off, and what is remaining is rock hard. I replaced the wire connector, that stays on the sending unit with no problems. I was just looking for protection for the connector. I will have to tape or liquid tape it the best I can to protect it. Thanks to all whom replied

Ken,

I've carried and installed both M&H and American Autowire harnesses many times. I can assure you from experience they are nearly identical in both construction and fit.

The American Autowire harnesses are wrapped exactly as originals and your claim that they are cheaper due to incomplete assembly or extra labor to install coulnd't be further from the truth.

In addition to viewing pictures online, I invite you to purchase one of each of the two manufacturers products and compare. I'm certain you will see both companies make comparable high quality harnesses.

If you get this one, check for snugness on your sending unit stud before you cut the old one off. It may be made for a different size stud.
