No head numbers
Posted by: Nelson ()
Date: January 30, 2018 10:05AM

I have tried to locate head numbers to no avail and maybe I’m just looking at it wrong but I checked both sides of the head and cannot for the life of me find the head numbers. Is it possible there isn’t any ? I’ve owned this 63 monza corvair convertible for a year now and love it, the previous owner did a great job in restoring the car but I’m frustrated cause I can’t those numbers on the head.
I took out the muffler hanger as suggested by someone on this forum who stated that once I pull off the muffler hanger I would see the number and there’s nothing there. The heads are very clean and not a spic of dirt on them

You probably need to remove the shrouding now that the hanger is out of the way.

Here is a link to a thread that has a great picture of where to look for the number!

Here's a picture from another forum that also gives an idea of where you need to look. I wonder if the guy knows he has the valve cover spreader bars on upside down.

I had some what I believe to be very early heads which didn't have a number in them at all. A couple of members on here identified it to be an early 1960 engine but it had seen some work so ive no idea if they were the engines original heads.

Just posted to back you up really and confirm there are head out there with no numbers....

Steve sez: It was me who suggested removing the muffler
hanger. If you look at the pic by Richard above you can
see numbers, that is passenger/coil side head at the
rear of course. The engine pictured is 65-up but the
number is in same place on early cars. I just tried
an early hanger on end of a head, removal of the hanger
exposes the number. How about a pic of the end of
your engine with the hanger removed?

Steve sez: I believe you Nelson, just odd there is not
a number cast into the head. Probably more than just me
is waiting to see a pic.

Some of the 1960 heads have the head number cast inside the valve area so its only visible with cover removed. Those are usually part 6256721 cast 6256711.

Thanks Nelson, it almost looks as if the end of the head was polished smooth. Just my observation from the pic.

Looks like a tiny "S" has been stamped into the end there.
Or are my old eyes playing tricks on me?

No your right about the “S” marking. Have no idea what that means

I’m going to look inside the valve cover area. Just waiting on a new gasket from clarks before I take the valve cover off

I am thinking if the # is not in the usual places then someone "polished" them off the head. Why I do not know.

Steve. If I indeed have a 1960 head on there what other head or heads can I place
In without doing any modifications
Basically what I’m asking is.. if I can’t find a 1960 head what others would fit
I’m only asking because a time sert was place in-correctly but the car still runs fine
