How did they get in There?
Posted by: Caveman_1960 ()

Okay. I've found mouse nests underneath the top shroud (turkey roaster?) of many a Corvair engine that sat around for a while. But how about this: The little guys found a way to make a nest on top of the camshaft. Anybody else ever see something like this? The cam is toast. The crank looks to be fine and only one of the con rods had any signs of mouseness (new word I just made up). - CP

I'd guess someone left the oil cap off for a minute...

I had a buggy with a Corvair engine that sat in a shed for many years on a farm. I pulled the turkey roaster off and it was packed so full, that it looked like the turkey roaster was still on. When I pulled the transaxle off, the bell housing was also full of mouse materials. The only opening was the hole for the pin on the clutch rod...but after they were in there for awhile the bottom of the bell housing also had a hole. It was corrosion from the inside of the bell housing evidently from mouse urine.

"How did they get in there?"

Well, you do have 2 cylinders with NO barrels on them!

A mouse can squeeze through a hole 1/4" in size. At least that's what I heard on a TV show about them.

Many years ago I shared a Mobile Home with a couple others. It was located in a Farmer's Field.
One evening I was watching TV and saw a mouse pop up out of a register vent in the floor.
It was a long narrow space (about 1/4" x 9") and until then I really would not have believed that a mouse could fit through a 1/4" gap in anything.

Okay, so besides the 2 LARGE holes where the cylinders are missing. The oil cap may have been left off. I am not familiar with that end of the engine, not sure about a mouse getting through there.
As for the PCV tube, there is the baffle plate to go through.eye rolling smiley
But how in the world does the CAM figure in here ? ? ?confused smiley

Mostly just kidding, but my sons Fiero had a weird smell when it was hot. Finally pulled the CAT. it was full of cherry pits that were getting toasted along with mouse crap. They would have had to got through the Muffler or the intake. This was a running engine that got a lot of rest while he was at college. Never figured out the path, only the result.

This pic has nothing to do with cars, it was in a house we inherited that was occupied by my wife's Uncle. He always said his cats kept the mice out.

I used to work in a place that made food-grade packaging and had special pest control training. The instructor said that mice can fit through an opening the size of your pinky.
