215 gives the vair the most factory feel and best balance IMHO. While the motor itself is older design, you can get them up to 4.6 in Rover variant and in some cases 5.0L not sure if that was just in the TVR or range rover as well. I have a datsun 1200 I have been looking for a 215 for.. its a great motor.

Regarding crank pulley interference with rear grill: Moving the 215 engine 2 inches forward allowed my rear grill to look like this. Ken Arnold

To those who have responded to my questions thank you

for those who are running a manual trans how are you setting up your
pressure plate and flywheel to match up with your corvair starter gears?

Anyone think it's possible to modify a Buick flexplate to hook up to the corvair torque converter and spacers on the flexplate to help line up the starter gears?

Not sure as to why the issues with pulleys and clearance, perhaps its the pulley type. our 215 (now Craig) never had issues nor does the LS1.

In my case, when I installed the ex-McCreery 215 (255) in my '66, the pulley clearance "problem" was caused by my use of a wider "serpentine" belt pulley system. I went with the serpentine belt because of my need to run an A/C compressor. In my assessment, a single 7/16" v-belt would have been overtaxed driving the 55-amp alternator, water pump, and A/C compressor.

If I didn't have A/C, I would have used the single V-groove crank pulley and there wouldn't have been an issue with the pulley touching the rear air grille. However, I'm pretty sure all 215 conversions still require notching of the rear frame rail.
