Engine Builders in the Midwest
Posted by: johnson52 ()

Hey guys, new here, MY Grandpa has a 1964 monza convertible. Last summer we were on the way home from a car show and it started making a noise in the engine. He is thinking it is a bearing but it only does it at higher rpms. I am used to small block chevys and when I have had a spun bearing in the past it has a noticeable squeal. Im just wondering if any one knows a place that could take a look at it and rebuild it if it needs to be rebuilt. I am located in North East Iowa. So someone in Iowa, Wisconsin, or Minnesota would be great, Also would possibly look into Nebraska, Missouri and Illinois depending on where its at.

Thanks

I do general repairs and rebuild engines 40 miles north of Minneapolis although I've got quite a bit of work lined up.
Perhaps Chuck or Eric Prosise will contact you, they are well connected in Iowa.
ICE (Iowa Corvair Enthusiasts) is the Corvair club and it seems like they're centered in Eastern Iowa.
I've got plenty to do and it's more important that you find a Corvair repair interest that's a good fit for you in the long run than whether I get a job or not.
I guess I would associate a crankshaft bearing with more of a knock than a squeal and not just noticeable at higher RPMs. Perhaps the local Corvair club guys would stop by for a visit and some diagnostic help.

Steve sez: not sure how well guessing at a noise on video
would be BUT you should have the noise diagnosed before
you decide that the engine needs rebuilding. Things such
as rocker arm failure/loose flywheel/loose or cracked
flex plate/cooling fan-alt-idler pulley bearings and more
can make noises.

I too suggest that you have a local Corvair person help with diagnosis. There may even be someone closer to you that can help with the repair. If it is beyond their expertise then get a hold of Jim Brandberg or me.

That's what I'm looking for is someone fairly close that can help with diagnosing. My original post may not have been as clear as I thought it was.

Where in Northeast IA?

I'm in DeWitt. I don't work on others cars- as I have plenty of projects of my own, and little time - but if I'm close by, maybe get you in touch with someone, or help diagnose.

Just a quick PMing tip for johnson52 and others. When PMing someone,
if you check the box (Keep A Copy In My Sent Items) in the upper left header,
you'll be able to see in your sent items if a person reads your PM. I use it to see if someone is just super busy or I'm being ignored.
