1966 RED Interior Question
Posted by: isucorvair ()

For those with original interiors - or at least original dash pads.

Is your dash pad 'significantly' darker than the rest of the interior?

In my 66 - it is more of a dark red, than the Medium Red upholstery (new from Clarks).

I understand that the dash metal, and steering column are a different paint code than the inner door metal - so I am guessing that the dash (factory) would have been a slightly darker shade?

I'm looking at Clarks dash pad color samples - the Bright Red looks too red (matches the seats) - and the Medium red almost looks too dark.

Thanks,

Eric,
Here's a photo of a very original 66 with 21K miles. It appears the dash pad is slightly darker than the paint on the A-pillars. It appears to match the original paint color of the metal dash panel. Hope this helps.

Eric -

How is the dash color compared to the seats? Slightly darker?

Unfortunately, I don't have any pix of this car that show both the dash pad and seats in the same shot. As I mentioned, it appears to closely match the metal painted dash panel. If you look at your dash panel where the pad was mounted, that should give you a pretty good idea of the color, I'm guessing.

The dash paint and dash pad are a darker red than the seats and doors.

Scroll down (Click here) and you'll see the paint codes for the two red paint colors. Vinyls are similar.

Below: My '66. Note that I opted for a brighter red for carpet and doors so the contrast is a bit greater than stock.

In my '66 Corsa the red dash pad matches the seats. Both are a lot darker then the new vinyl colors. Red reacts to sunlight differently than most other colors and darkens with exposure. Eventually goes to almost black.

My old dash pad is dark - a nice burgundy, and darker than the dash paint.

Once the car is back from the body shop - I'll pull the pad, and do some more comparisons before I order, I guess.

I would think that the "flatness" of the dash pad may contribute to the shade difference.

My 66 Corsa (first owned starting in 1968) with original interior paint and dash pad have a darker dash and pad similar to vairjunkey and cnicol. And while some portions of the pad have "sunburned" since 1968, the dash panel and undamaged pad portions are (and were) close to the same color. Plus for what it is worth, can not comment on the steering wheel color since it is wood grain plastic but the steering column is the same darker red as the dash panel.

Mike:

You are right. I forgot I had the tag read out by the GURUs here about 18 months ago. But the seats, door panels and carpet sure look red.

On my 65 '500' moredoor, the dash paint and pad are darker. It is bone stock, with exception of dealer option pad.
