John Sweet had one for a reasonable price AND he is a trusted CORVAIR ONLY vendor.

What end of the alternator support system do you need? The pulley end which is aluminum and also houses the oil filler spout. Or the rear end, which is a flat strap.

I am not familiar with the flat strap you are in need of. Hopefully someone will post a picture so we can see what it looks like.

Looks like it came from a Corvair Frank. Thanks Matt. Looks about as clear as mud now. (I think I am more confused too).

It is surprising how may LM Corvairs I've seen without that alternator support strap.

Folks usually say "It's worked without it". I reply "Yes it works until that hard to find aluminum support assembly cracks!"

I have 5 externally regulated alternators. 1 rebuilt and 4 off dismantled cars. I think the 4 will be gold mines when the cracking alternator front frames start happening.spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

But since no one has reported one in the 7 years I have been lurking or registered, I think not to many will crack. But the alternators I have will be gotten rid of sooner than later. Too bad Clark's only gives $5 for fans, not worth my time or money to ship them any.

Anyway Nelson, get the free one. They are $15 from Clark's or anyone else. Even me. I think I have 2 left as spares for my car.

Thanks to all responders. You people on this forum are great. I agree with 66vairman. I know I don’t really need it BUT I don’t want it to crack off

Actually, it is the front half of the alternator that is Corvair only. The rear half is the same as many other cars of this vintage.
That bracket should be on there (as per the Chevrolet engineers). All my cars/trucks/vans/wagons have it on there.
I have had to modify it for my vehicles with the internal regulator set up.

Tim:

That is why I thinking of selling the front frame, fan, nut and washer only. It is not worth it to get these rebuilt to Internally Regulated Alternators. Last one was $206 7 years ago. I'll keep one or 2 unit's frame and fan to convert a 10-SI for my use and sell the rest.

Well Al - If you only drive a few thousand miles on a hobby Corvair, then 7 years isn't much time. Each to their own.

I figure if GM could have gotten by without spending the money on that bracket they sure would have.

Yes you have to re-bend the support to fit the 10SI internally regulated alternator rear housing. Nothing a good vise can't handle.

Maybe I miscommunicated. If these rear support brackets have been left off from some time after the introduction of the alternator (1965), then say from 1970 on, someone should have had one crack or someone heard of one that had cracked. I just have not read in the forum of one cracking yet. 7 years is still a newby compared to many others. I have no doubt they will crack someday. Fifty year old metal under stress without support will relieve the stress sooner or later. Heat and cold cycles doesn't improve the life expectancy.

We are talking about two different things - A stock alternator strap is easily available - one that works with a hi-output have to be fabricated.Which is it in this case?

I am installing an internally regulated alternator in my Monza and Greenbreir. I am not making a new support brace. I am doing what was suggested in a discussion years ago. Making a aluminum bush to take up the gap between the support and the alternator. Tried to find the post with the photo but with all the Photobucket placeholders, it was a lost cause. I will post a photo of the Greenbrier's when it is made and mounted.
