Does anyone have valid data for folded fin coolers vs.12 plate coolers?

There is somewhere as I remember the folded fin having almost the same BTU rating as the 12 plate cooler. It was published a long time ago, maybe in the Corsa Communique.

I'm looking for valid data on the units performance.

Last info I saw posted here and somewhere else was that the folded fin and 12 plate were too close to call an advantage and the one disadvantage, IMO, is that the folded fin air passages are so fine that keeping them clean is more difficult on a regular basis.

I think the CCF post I am thinking of was about bolting multiple 8 or 12 plates together and there was a reference to the folded fin and 12 plates efficiencies.

As many have said before on other topics, GM spent millions in R&D and did not make changes lightly. If you have a folded fin, use it but keep it clean. and I am not sure it is worth the extra perceived effort or $$$ to acquire a folded find over a 12 plate.

DOn Yenko did not offer the OEM folded fin, to my knowledge, and when the lucky owners of Yenko Stingers start backdating to the folded fin I will take notice, until then, I will stick with my 12 plate, Full Fin Clarks cylinders and deflashed heads, that combo works good for me in our hot Misssouri summers. Just my two cents.

Looking forward to spring.

CORVAIR SECRETS by Bob Helt holds the best answer. As mentioned above pretty similar temp range.

My observations: Folded fin is harder to keep clean and 12 plate needs side shrouds. Take your pick and buy Bob's book, lots more secrets inside.

The most accurate tested data is found in Bob Helts books. I actually prefer the FF coolers with their built in side covers.
I believe 1 reason the FF coolers were frowned on is they can get dirty quicker than the plate coolers.
I was never afraid to do proper maintenance on my vehicles.

Well, I did run the folded fin in my race car! That was the only cooler I had for 4 seasons. I'm not talking an occasional weekend I am talking 2 class championships with one club and 2 seconds in another club. I probably did 15-20 race weekends a summer!

Currently I am again going against the grain and installing a rear fan cooled oil cooler in YS-318.

Maybe I'm wrong on this, but I recall the folded fin would fit in the place of a 8 plate on an LM so it was an easy upgrade since the 12 plate requires engine tin changes.

That is correct 66. Direct bolt in upgrade over the 8 plate.

I make the side shrouds for the 8 plate too, betcha the cooling range is pretty close with the shrouding.
