I'll let the people who know exactly why the diode needs to be there explain it. A 2016 discussion had the same question too. I liked the explanation, so it is in my schematic. Schematic was also validated by someone who is more knowledgeable than me on Corvair electrical systems. Something about the light glowing when it is not suppose to, I think.

I have never installed or ever needed to install a diode in the wiring. I have not done many of these conversions in my time, maybe about 10 over the last 40 years of my love affair with Corvairs. In fact my brother calls my Corvair hobby my first love.
