A Great one Passes - Dan Gurney - gone at 86.
Date: January 15, 2018 07:03AM

Bill Chellis, President of North Cascades Corvairs, sent this out yesterday after hearing about Dan Gurney's death.

When once asked what his favorite car was, Dan was quoted to say:

“ I wrestled with this question. But I’ll say (my favorite car is) the 1962 Corvair turbo convertible. That car was safe at any speed as far as I am concerned. It was a great car. I got mine through Bunkie Knudsen and had it in Europe, where I met the light of my life."

Dan was driving for Porsche in Europe in the early 1960s. Chevrolet arranged for him to get one of the new Spyders.

Dan Gurney's "All American Racers" website now displays their Memorial to Dan

I met Dan Gurney at the 1964 US Grand Prix and told him he was responsible for my being there. My wife was not interested in racing, but she loved Dan Gurney. As a result, I got to go to races where he participated: USGP, Sebring, Daytona. I shared my photos of him online, e.g. shoehorning himself into his Brabham-Climax. I invited Dan to speak to our Drivers' Club, but he declined apologetically and sent some Tom Sneva pins. Dan's legend will live on.

Hmmm, interesting.

Could be just ignorance on the part of the article writer, but it has 2 things that caught my eye.
It says that Dan G's Spyder . . . .
made 152 hp.
and had.....
"a many bladed plastic fan on top of the engine --- instead of the standard metal model."

All American Racers and Anglo American Racers, Eagle cars, all good stuff on a world class level during the Golden Age of racing. Dan Gurney with Carroll Shelby and Richie Ginther. I love the smell of race gas in the morning. RIP and Godspeed Dan Gurney.

I had the unexpected pleasure of meeting one of his chief mechanics a few months ago. All I could say was wow. I was in awe. Even bought some corvair parts from him.

Does anyone know if Mr. Gurney made any public comment in support of Corvairs after Nader's book?
