Mid "Corvair engine" Build Discussion.
Posted by: OttawaCorvairGuy ()
Date: January 13, 2018 08:11AM

For many years I have had this mid "Corvair engine" build in mind.
This is not a V8 mid engine in a Corvair or anything that will even be put into a Corvair.

It will be a mid-engine install with a Porsche 5 speed or to help keep cost down (if funds are low - as we all know can happen with our projects) it will be a standard Corvair power-plant with a factory 4 speed. Either way it will have a Corvair engine.

This setup could and has (over the years) gone into:

1. A custom dune buggy or sand rail

2. Some kind of dragster for kicks

3. Some kind of odd build.

I'm still up in the air if it will be Carbureted or Fuel Injection.

Whatever I end up doing I would like to share the process if at all possible.

(Ottawa Area - Canada)

(2) Our 1963 Rampside (Sold 2014) and 1967 Ultravan #256 at Upper Canada Valley car show in 2009.
(UV256 aak Itchy Feet II - corvair power plant came out 2012 - plans with donor for a GM 3.8L FWD conversion, as a gas pusher, in the back of UV256)
(3 & 4) Are some of our 11 Corvair parts cars - to help keep our stuff on the road - hopefully as long as we live. ;-)
(5) Is one of our Wayne 100 boats (Corvair powered)
(6) Nov 14, 2012 Ultravans #362 and #512 arrived. We are getting closer to our goal of having an Ultravan museum.
We now own; UV248, UV256, UV362, UV512, and UV520 will hopefully be here July 2013.
(7) I saved Ultravan #231 from the scarp yard this year. It arrived May 9, 2013 and I plan to flip this one with a mid-engine Subaru power plant.

It would be nice to see drawings of the transaxle used in the mid engine Corvair show car. I suppose they were never saved. Of course the engineering/building to make a one of a kind would be prohibitive for the average person.

Yesterday I was talking with the guy who will more than likely be making the frame that I will be using.
That is when the conversation about measurements came up that I had no answers for.

Rough estimate to have the frame built is 3k and up with no suspension and it can take up to 8 to 12 weeks to get it done.

Does anyone happen to have or is willing to get the following measurements?
(Sadly everything I have is PG power-plants. I have no way of getting these measurements until I have everything here. But I would like to be able to order the frame when I'm ready (allowing for the 8 to 12 week lead time) while at the same time allowing me to get all the parts needed to put the power-plant and transaxle combo together for test fit, just before rebuilding the engine for good.)

LM Corvair Engine Only: (No Trans or diff measurements at this time)

1A. From outer edge (tip) of engine mount bracket to where the bell-housing mounts to engine.

1B. From outer edge (tip) of engine mount bracket to the outer edge of the manual bell-housing mounted on the engine.

Complete Stock LM 4 speed power-plant measurements:

2. Full length from outer edge (tip) of engine mount bracket to far end of factory 4 speed - including anything that might stick out past end of the trans case. Allowing room for such things as shifting rod or whatever might be there. (Never have owned a manual Corvair before)

3. From outer edge (tip) of engine mount bracket to center of axles on same factory 4 speed setup

Now a LM Engine mated to a Porsche 5 speed with adapter:

2B. Full length from outer edge (tip) of engine mount bracket to far end of Porsche 5 speed - including anything that might stick out past end of the trans case.

3B. From outer edge (tip) of engine mount to center of axles o the Porsche 5 speed

Lord willing I will.

I only like to physically work on 2 projects at a time. Now that does not mean I can and will not research other ideas. Grin

Anyways, UV520 is on hold - again. I was hoping to have some news before Christmas break. But the wind tunnel at the college was in such sad shape that they are months behind with the testing on UV520.

UV231 is on hold during the winter - with no garage (yet) big enough to work on it all year around.

Plus house goes back on the market February for sale and this time we are also listing it for rent. Taking whichever one comes first - so I can move on with other things.

Which car are you talking about? I have been reading up on all kinds of mid Corvair engine stuff that I can find. Any pictures out there of the one you are talking about?

Bob,

Is the thread on this forum? I tried and still trying to search for it. What is the subject line?

Nothing with 914 came up. I also tried Corvair in a 914 - I get pages and pages of anything with Corvair in it. Go figure. ggg

Anyone have the link to what Bob is talking about?

Tony - When the factory built the Corvair mid-engined -Think Monza GT - they used a special reverse cut Ring and pinion mounted in the same case as the regular one. The engine and transmission turned as originally designed. the output of the differential was the only thing reversed. There were a number of those sets re-made in the aftermarket. That is the simplest way to go mid-engine. Not the cheapest or the best "technically", perhaps - It would be nice to have a 5-speed! But it allows you to use Corvair parts - mostly. If you want to use the Boxster transaxle, you would have to reverse the motor rotation. From a technical aspect, you should try to maintain the greatest number of parts turning in their original design direction. That said, many reversed motors have been built. The reversed ring & Pinion should be investigated to make sure oil is going into the correct places during operation.

Tony, if ground clearance won't be a problem with this vehicle.... just slice and rotate the Corvair bellhousing and mount the Vair transaxle upside down.... that's keep costs down! Been done many times!

Not saying that I will go this route. But I am open and curious.

If I did do that to the bell-housing and flip the Diff. Will the trans bolt to the diff upside down or right side up?

More details please Matt!
Many many years ago I was told that "some people flip the diff over for mid-engine use."
But no one knew how, and no-one for a long time has even heard of doing such a thing.

Why is there "ground clearance issues? The starter?

Correct.. the starter will hang low!

Not much to it.... Cut the B-H and seal the Diff. vent...drill another on NEW top after installing

Very interesting!

And the tranny goes normal? or it is upside down also?

Everything is upside down to keep it simple....

I've also got the instructions on how to flip just the differential on a PG.... although Warren LeVeque ran his PG upside down as well... and it worked fine...

Sadly much more involved in this mod..
