Shift Shaft Seal replacement problems
Posted by: bnoggle ()
Date: January 11, 2018 02:47PM

I have been attempting to replace my shift shaft seal for the past three weeks. I purchased three seals all from Amazon. When I try to install them I seem to crush them on one side every single time. I use a socket that is about the same size as the seal and tap it into place with a hammer. Today I realized that the seals I am trying to install do not look anything like the one I removed from the Corvair several months ago. I have looked around online and have not found anything that looks like this thing. The entire original seal is flexible like a bushing and is about 3/4 of an inch long. Am I purchasing the incorrect part?

Yes, you have the wrong part.

i.d. is flexible , rubber.
o.d. is metal.
about 1/8' deep.

I suggest going with a Corvair vendor and get the right part.

The seal You need looks like this without the screws in it, I use the screws to remove them, Do not buy corvair parts from amazon, We have good vendors like Clarks and CA vairs who will send you the correct part, I never buy parts from any where else for my Vairs, Amazon?? you should know better!smoking smiley

Actually, I forgot the first one I tried was from clarks, and it seemed like it did not want to fit either. It seems like the seals are too large to fit into the transaxle housing. I started ordering from amazon because it was faster shipping but you are correct Dave, I should have known better.

I get them from Ca vairs all the time and they fit and work fine.

Are you positively sure you have ALL of the old seal removed from the bore. Measure the bore with calipers and the new seal should only be .003-.005 bigger.

Might be hard to get the calipers in there with that shift shaft in the way.grinning smiley

But I would try and see if the clearance is there. I do not recall having an issue installing this seal.

What is the part number molded into the seals you are trying? If the same number is on the Clark's and Amazon part, then probably the same size seal (except for manufacturing tolerances....). Oh, I see Clark's list a double seal seal. I still have the C497 types around.

Steve Goodman listed this a while back: C/R number is 5606.

Another trick is to use a flat washer between the seal and the socket you are using to install the new seal. Find a washer that just fits overt the transmission shifting shaft. The washer will give you a flat surface on the seal housing to seat it in place.

Seal will also leak if a protective sleeve isn't used. Pin hole forward of shift shaft has sharp edges that will easily destroy rubber lip on seal.

You can also use a little emery cloth around the pin hole to remove any sharp edges, before installation.

I also like to use some petroleum jelly on the rubber so it slides a bit easier.
Also some (sparingly) 3M trim glue around the outside of it as the trans case is cast iron (porous). Most of the time this is a non issue.

Since you don't have the original. Buy from one of the vendors.

Being a little far from no where, I took mine to my local bearing store (two block walk) and he matched me up with a double lip seal that works great.

Used calipers to measure the hole today and found that it was not round. Turns out that there was a paper thin shim in the top of the hole (who shims a seal?)that was not allowing the seal to go all the way in. Now that I have that out the hole is round, and when it sat one the destroyed seals at the edge of the hole it looks like the seal should slip right in. New seal arrives tomorrow or Monday. Thanks for all the suggestions.
