FOUND!! : used running engine in SoCal / San Diego
Posted by: alpinemetal ()
Date: January 08, 2018 06:20AM

I'm at a crossroads with my 65 convertible. It either part it out and send what left to the scrap heap, or find a running 110 that fits my budget.
Sadly I'm leaning scrap heap because the rebuild option with the existing 64 engine isn't fitting the budget.

What is your budget and location? That might help.

I'm in the San Diego area...budget is low. The car has a very good interior (not stock), floor and trunk plans are basically rust free, top is ok but the rear window is seriously hazed body as a couple of very small cancer cells at the fender and door jamb and it looks like it got whacked on the left rear quarter at one time and the repair wasn't the best of quality.
I've already install two new Clarks carbs, a Seth type ignition with blaster coil, alternator and voltage regulator.

Bottom line it'll never be on the grass at the Fan Toss and from what I've seen in SoCal it'll never be a 6K plus car unless time is spent on the body...I just wanted a driver for a little while and turn it over to my twins for driving to school in two years.

If I cant find a running engine I'll either list it for 2K or part it out.

So it's not only a budget question it's a worth keeping the car question, a good deal on a running 110 I keep...sinking 3-5k into a rebuild I part it out to try and recoup my losses.

Any advice is appreciated.

Do you belong to the club in San Diego? Many times they
know of good parts deals. They also run this forum.

Change your subject line to reflect your location too,
that will attract the many SD readers here. Good luck

It would be more useful if you were to state what you wish to pay for a engine and if it really needs to be a 110 engine to get the car running and drive-able.
I have installed 95 and 102 engines in cars of your description in the past with excellent results.
You might take that path.
I have engines here that would serve the purpose in good running condition for less half of what it would cost to rebuild one.
But with them being on the East Coast, and given your "budget" statement, shipping would be prohibitive.
I do have a complete, low mileage, tested on my test bench plug and play 95HP engine sitting here for $1500 if anyone is interested.
It is for a standard shift application, but I have the parts here to make it PG compatible.
Plus a couple of 102HP types.

alp, as a "user" you have 8 minutes to edit posts. After that one of the 3 Moderators here can do it. I did it!

Now What is your Budget?

Used "Running" engines usually go for $750-$2,000

Thursday night at 7pm is the next meeting of the San Diego Corvair Club. I joined a few years ago for help with my 64 and met a lot of great people. [www.sandiegocorvair.com]

750 to 1000 would fit the budget.

I've been holding off joining the SDCC pending having an actual running Corvair,
Rod Tetrault from the club has been a tremendous help.

Steve sez: the club is the most help to you when you
are working on your car. Then you get to repay
by helping the next new member and attending the
events

Rod is great as well as all of the SDCC. It is a large club and people like Paul Kehler (I hope he is doing well) are the ones to talk to about getting engines.
Seems I have seen "parts cars" that had good engines available. Out of curiosity, what exactly is wrong with your existing engine? Quite often it is cheaper to fix existing than getting another.

Rod looked at it for me, it seems someone put a 64 95hp engine in the car at one time. Rod notes compression to be around 50 on all tubes. When it was running the advance was 16 degrees and the he checked again at his place it was running a 34 degrees advance.

It's weird, "if" it started it would run and sound strong but forget restarting.

Sounds like a good engine to start with.... don't trash it...

All cylinders with low / even compression and starting problem sounds like slipped cam gear!

Timing moving like that sounds like sticky distributor advance mechanism.

Matt,

Rod said the cam gear mark wasn't off and it will only run at 32 degrees

The cam gear 0 is where it's supposed to be when I pulled the pan that was my first thought to check. Unless it was a miracle it slipped back there when Turing it by hand both directions. The valves were adjusted next ... stock spare distributor of my own rebuilt by me dropped in with same 34° result. After looking closer the distributor drive gear on the crank looked less that average so I swapped it out for a good used gear. Same result only with a fresh battery and good starter can I get it to spin fast enough to pop then run at 34° ... my guess is the compression is so low it will only run there by miracle. I told jerry it needs to come out and come apart to know more and make repairs.

You could do a quick and cheap ring and valve job. Eng stays in car. Clean piston and ring grooves and remove ridge and hone cyl and new rings/rod bearings. Take heads apart and clean plus deflashing and guides as needed and valves and drive the car. Absolutely NOT the best solution but it will make the eng run with minimum money and mostly your labor.

I think that was referred at the "Frankenstein"solution by my good friend.
I'd prefer a good used engine out of a dune buggy I'm seeing on Craigslist, use the engine and sell the buggy.

Always "Beware" of buggy engines, most are abused, not built correctly, full of sand and ready to blow.

Steve sez: actually in the good old days it was called
'overhauled' OR 'ring and valve job' instead of 'rebuilt'.
Lots of engines of all makes received that work and most
lasted for many miles. Not something normally done today
but still a workable option for small money outlay.
