Mid-Corvair Engine idea
Posted by: OttawaCorvairGuy ()

I've had this idea in my head for many years.
This winter I really started working on it.

It is a Mid-Corvair Engine Setup. (NOT for use in a Corvair)

Lots of things to work out and discuss.

First off:

1. What model trans was Porsche's 1st FIVE speed?
2. What configuration (rear engine or front engine) was it?
3. Will it mate to a Corvair Engine?
4. What years was this trans available?
5. As a MID-ENGINE setup. Will the Corvair engine have to be a reverse engine?

Thank you,
Tony

That's a lot of research. You can start here- [bfy.tw]

I would venture to guess anything that was designed for a Porsche would not simply bolt up to a Corvair engine. Luckily anything will bolt to anything if you throw enough money at it.

What type of vehicle do you have planned?

Kyle,

The last manual I drove was in high school.

There are a number of guys on here who have looked into using a Porsche manual trans for one project or another.
Some have actually done it.
My hope is to tape that knowledge and discuss this idea of my MID-Corvair engine setup.
As with most everything in life - not everyone will like what I'm up to or want to do it.
It is something that I would like to see happen - just to know I did it - IF at all possible.

Tony-

FWIW -

Terry Kalp has / had a mid-engine Formula Vee track car - Corvair Engine to VW Transaxle, but mid-engine.

There are dune buggies - Deserter GS Specifically - that are made to be mid-engine, with Corvair power.

The Corvair engine will also bolt up to a Hewland Mk 8 and Mk 9 - You use the Corvair to VW adapter. This install used a Mk 8 4-speed. Engine was not reversed, but the Hewland allowed flipping the ring gear with no ill effects. You will have to learn to shift a dog-ring box. It was fun.

Tony,

I am a little late to the party. If your still considering Porsche trans, there are several to consider;

901 used in early Porsche 911, up to 1971
901/902 used in the Porsche 912
915/4 which was used in Porsche/VW 914 mid engine.
915 used in Porsche 911 and later SC, from 1972 to 1986
G40 used in Porsche Carrera 911, 1983 and later

Differences; Gear sets and the type 901 had first gear outside the normal "H" pattern and was based on road racing trans.

The type 915, 1972-1986, has the more "useful" 1st gear in the H pattern with fifth gear outside H pattern.

G40 notchy feel, like our 1966 Corvair 4 speed vs. our '65 trans.

Reverse cam still needed.

There are a couple of VW to Corvair adaptors for sale on ebay today.

Hope this helps.

3.0 / 3.1 Big Bore build with nice cam, some extra goodies, (maybe FI Stacks) and a 5 speed.

For enjoyment = RT or 1/8 and 1/4 racing - not sure which...
