Broken Oil Pan Bolt
Posted by: The Stig ()
Date: January 07, 2018 11:38AM

Others as well as I have mentioned this type of repair before. But thought I would make a thread with pictures. Working on a friend/club members car. It was leaking oil like a sieve. Mostly from the bad oil cooler seals but also noticed a missing bolt head on the oil pan.

Welded a nub on it with the mig welder. Then backed it out with pliers. Short quick bursts of the mig directly on the bolt head built it up without the bead touching the pan. Took about 5 minutes start to finish. The replacement bolt was an uncleaned original off another engine, you could never tell! tongue sticking out smiley

And you didn't even remove the oilpan. Nice work. I suppose the welding also helps break loose the rust and steel/aluminum galling that caused the bolt to break off in the first place.

Nice work, I have done that as well. My first try on that stuff is a spring loaded center punch and a reverse drill bit. Its amazing how many will twist right out once the head is gone. If that doesn't work, out comes the MIG.

Has anyone utilized studs instead of bolts? It seems this would help with the issue of stripping bolts.

I'm sure people have.... just not worth it IMO How many times do you pull the pan?

That's a good point Matt. I for one have never had to drop the pan. Just looking for a different "solution" so to speak. I've read all of the different processes and even a new product that's available to deal with this issue. I'm just looking for something that works for when the time comes that I will have to "drop the pan".

There are several places making/offering studs and nuts for oil pan sets.

Lot's of racer guys are using them

Seems that it would ease aligning the pan when you do replace it or the gasket.

I have on occasion removed broken bolts by drilling them with a left-handed bit. Use a punch or a tap to make a dimple in the bolt and start by drilling with a small bit. If that doesn't work, use a larger bit.
