Builders of Corvair "Plastic" MODELS
Posted by: OttawaCorvairGuy ()

Flash back. WOW - The last plastic car model I build was in the mid 70's.

Builders of Corvair "Plastic" MODELS:
Which LM Corvair "Plastic" Model Kit has the best engine detail and are they still available?

Please share pictures of your Model... Thank You,

Tony
(Ottawa Area - Canada)

(1) Marie's 1962 Convertible and our 1966 Ultravan #248 (aka Itchy Feet - Long Restoration)
(2) Our 1963 Rampside (Sold 2014) and 1967 Ultravan #256 at Upper Canada Valley car show in 2009.
(UV256 aak Itchy Feet II - corvair power plant came out 2012 - plans with donor for a GM 3.8L FWD conversion, as a gas pusher, in the back of UV256)
(3 & 4) Are some of our 11 Corvair parts cars - to help keep our stuff on the road - hopefully as long as we live. ;-)
(5) Is one of our Wayne 100 boats (Corvair powered)
(6) Nov 14, 2012 Ultravans #362 and #512 arrived. We are getting closer to our goal of having an Ultravan museum.
We now own; UV248, UV256, UV362, UV512, and UV520 will hopefully be here July 2013.
(7) I saved Ultravan #231 from the scarp yard this year. It arrived May 9, 2013 and I plan to flip this one with a mid-engine Subaru power plant.

Any of the late-model AMT models (they have been reissued many times) seem to have a pretty well detailed engine.

If you are just looking for the engine and do not mind one from an early model; while both the original and reissue are no longer produced either is still pretty easy to find cheap. Plus you get a 392 Hemi as part of the deal, reissue pictured:

Tony-

Every AMT/Ertyl kit has exact,y the same detail.

Depending on what exactly. You are looking for- the AMT Blueprinter Parts pack with early Corvair engine (with turbo parts) plus an AMT car kit engine, PLUS the engine in the Ed Roth Road Agent, you can source some bits to make a relatively close approximation. This is speaking only 1/24 scale.
Notes:
No early model kits had engines - all were molded into the chassis
The 65/66/67 Annual AMt kits came with Turbo parts
No AMT kit ever came with a stock 110 air cleaner
The AMT engine/Blueprinter parts pack came with a 61-63 air cleaner set up
The Ed Roth Road Agent has a PG transaxle
There is a kit called the Trailblazer from the 60's that has a '60 engine...

Any of the LM kits have the same engine detail except for the turbo parts. The chrome plated turbo air cleaner, heat shield, and intake x-over were last present in the 1967 or 1968 annual kit. The unplated turbo parts remained in later reissues.

The current release is the 1969 posted above by Shaker455 - Has all options for a Fitch Sprint or Yenko. Engine is a 140hp but you can cut up the air cleaner base and move the snorkel to do a 110. The most recent last 2 reissues also include a top boot so you can chop off the roof and build a convertible. The kits were only hardtops and the boot was used for the dealer promo models. The kit interior was always a convertible interior with the rear arm rests molded in.

The beater blue one pictured above is in my display case - bought it off ebay early last year. Builder did an incredible job weathering it.

If you want a bigger 1/8 scale engine, look for one of the scale trikes!

A couple more photos of the weathered model. Builders name is Ian and goes by topfueldragcars on ebay. Does an amazing job on getting the chipped paint look - very different from what most weathered models look like.

Jeff, are you going to restore that one? '69s are rare, ya know...

A Corvair powered trike was issued by the name of "Dragonfire" and may have the same engine as the one solo2r mentions in his post. I have the engine from the kit and it is quite detailed but does have some minor accuracy defects.
