Imminent Retirement
Posted by: Ratt643 ()
Date: January 05, 2018 11:14AM

I found out last week that I will be retiring from the Air Force on Febuary 21. I enlisted in August 1989 right out of high school. Now after 27 years of being a traditiinal guardsman and working as federal technician for 19 years, its time... After losing part of my right lung last year to a fungus, the military has found me medically unfit and giving me a medical retirement.
So now it off to the VA to see what my disability rating will be and awaiting my technician retirement, sometime between August and October. I have two jobs waiting me. One is driving a tanker from Knoxville to Macon, Ga hauling jet fuel. The other, to start working on Corvairs more than i can now. Just tbought i would lass along!

After about 40 years in the transportation Business, I can say if you want to to work, it is about the easiest money you can make driving anything if you can get along with the annual tsa paperwork. Hauling liquid fuel that is. For me Corvairs are a good hobby . Thanks for your service and I hope the VA treats you well.

A "life-time" of service to the defense of the U.S.A. smileys with beer

Great to hear you have made it through. As stated, remain determined when dealing with the VA and hope you get an understanding administrator on your side.

All the Best in what ever you decide. I'll be that there are many more opportunities available to you as well...

Thank you for your service. My father did 28 years in the Air Force and I have great respect for anyone that served in any branch. My father went through cancer twice and the VA took good care of him. I've heard that the VA is a bit of a crapshoot. Some facilities are better than others.

From one vet to another, thank you for your service.

The first 10% is easy, everything after that is a fight, as you probably already know. If you haven't already completed your discharge physical, ensure you let them know about your hearing loss, tinnitus if you've ever experienced ringing in your ears, and every ache, pain or twitch you've experienced. Any eye problems you've had, etc. whether it adds to your disability now, or not, get it documented. I worked in a high noise area while I was in, and I'm having problems getting any disability because it wasn't documented when I left service. I don't even want any money, just acknowledgement that it is service connected.

Best of luck to you.

Even with good hearing if you have ringing in your ears then that is an auto 10%.

You should have a state VA rep that is NOT connected to the VA, those people are your best source of help with the VA.

If you do get 100% and unless you really need the extra money do something you like!

Looks like you are going to experience another phase. You will do well and have several great choices. May be more difficult to visit Wichita, but maybe will have more time for Corvairs and Corvair events.

Congratulations. My retirement has been a blast and yours will be also.
